My pride and joy, audio-wise, is my MiniDisc player; it's small, has insane battery life, and has decent-sounding double-play mode. Inevitably, therefore, I have a disc which consists entirely of Wire: Read and Burn 02, followed by Read and Burn 01, followed by Pink Flag, followed by Chairs Missing. It makes for an interesting juxtaposition, anyway. Listening to it, three things occur to me in a kind of vague and unfocused way: i) although Wire are in many ways nothing like Wire Mk 1 now, a reasonably impartial observer would still be able to say "this is the same band" - in a way that maybe isn't true of 80s Wire. This ties in with the stuff Colin was saying on Mixing It, I think, about Wire MkII being a complete disconnect from Wire MkI, and Wire MkIII being an incremental growth, and probably more importantly re-evaluation of the *concept*, of Wire MkI. ii) "99.9" may well have become my favourite Wire track. I can't get enough of it. MBV have been being mentioned a lot on this list at the moment; the outro, from about 07:00 onwards, sounds like the dystopian, nightmarish brother of the glide-guitar style to me - redolent of the same *ambition* but focussed towards anger rather than the romanticism of MBV's records. iii) R+B02 sounds much more... expansive to me than R+B01 - possibly more ambitious? I'm not in a position to comment. I can see "Raft Ants" fitting R+B01, but not "99.9", for example. Anyway, back on more important matters, what time are people getting to the pub? I'll be the serious-looking young guy with the wireframe glasses and dark brown hair... - - Andrew - -- email: andrew@lexical.org.uk http://www.lexical.org.uk/ Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge http://www.esc.cam.ac.uk/ CUR1350, 1350 MW Cambridgeshire and online http://www.cur1350.co.uk/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Apr 2003 15:27:39 +0100 From: Alistair Tear Subject: [idealcopy] ot - no wire content whatsoever From Matthew Norman's Guardian Diary page A setback for the BNP's local election campaign in Medway, where one of its four candidates has been forced to withdraw. The rehearsal recordings include the previously released Little Jammy Thing; unreleased takes on the albums Stalker, Youth Against Fascism and Wish Fulfillment, and the never-before-released songs Lite Damage, Dreamfinger, Barracuda, New White Kross, Guido, Moonface, Poet In The Pit and Theoretical Chaos. Will they stamp themselves on Wire as they have on Goya? But jake and dinos are Artists, not musicians so there isn't anything they can add to the actual sound. Unless they perhaps spend the set trying to wrestle members of the band to the ground, or just unplug the guitars and kick over Roberts drumkit. As Document & Eyewitness proved, and the fact that they spent the last 20 years not playing any of their old songs, Wire are more than capable of agitating their own audience. So Jake and Dinos don't really need to shock or disrupt. This would be pointless. if they do want to defile Wire in some way, they should work on the 'Send' section. this isn't the sacred cow, its the LP that Wire want to plug and sell so they can pay their mortgages and fund their solo projects/record labels. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V6 #116 *******************************
