I caught the Buzzcocks last friday here in Leeds. I liked the Buzzcocks in my teens though I never acquired much but never caught them live. Plus I thought it would be an interesting comparison with the Wire III (not sonically, but as a phenomenon). We arrived late and the band were already on. The place was packed, but through an intricate set of pulleys and levers we managed to get right down the front. I don't know the new stuff but most of the old classics were performed. I recall in TOTP heyday always considering Steve Diggle as rather dour and straighfaced. Not tonight - he was having an absolute ball, inclusively nodding and winking and grinning like a hyper-active, axe weilding George Formby. Pete Shelley, on the other hand looked somewhat detached and has a rather avuncular double chin these days. Thankfully, the gobbing which my mate says was appalling when he had seen them a few years prior (in the 90s), was almost non-existent. Contrary to Wrexham it seems, the sound was okay - but as Keith says, loud. Off in the side room, the merchandise was playing heavily on former glories, with Love Bites and ..Tension imagery in heavy preponderance. There was something of a feel of a FriendsReunited theme night bash with mid-40ites decked out in punk attire of former glories (though in fairness for all I know that might still constitute their daywear), leaping about to old school disco favourites. Pleasurable for all that. In contrast, the overall feel to me was of cabaret, in contrast to Wire at the ICA last year, where there seemed a real sense of something important about to happen, an element of the unexpected, from a group firing off in a new direction. To some extent, then, I have apprehensions about the Pink Flag set at the Barbican. Though I'm intrigued by the Chapman Brothers angle, I'm sure that for some it will be a real nostalgia fest - glad I ain't got a front row seat. Far more exciting for me is the send set, though that does seem to be rather less heralded. Any day now, Send should arrive in the post.
