In Holland it had very bad reviews. As did it's predecessor (wich I liked very much though it wasn't as good as any Pavement record). AT Keith, you already have Pig Lib? > Its final two albums ('97's Brighten the Corners and '99's > Terror Twilight) seemed by contrast polite, perfunctory, > and just a little bored--best remembered as faint echoes > of what preceded them, and best praised with apologies. Totally disagree here! Both these albums are unbelievably coherent, rich and inspiring. It's only the people who wanted Pavement to keep on repeating the Slanted & Enchanted thing who would say things like the above. It's a bit like the "everything-after-Pink-Flag-is-rubbish" bullshit we spoke of last week. I think Pavement matured very well and turned more into themselves as they more or less lost their Sonic Youth/Fall/MES influences (wich I did love also). Every time I hear Terror Twilight's The Hexx I am saddened by the loss of what for me was the greatest band of the nineties. Radiohead and Strokes producer Nigel Godrich did a fine job here (as did Jonny Greenwood who plays harmonica on Platform Blues and Billie). S&E is a fine album, but the blatant Fall-isms do grate. They found their own sound a few albums later. >> Every time I hear Terror Twilight's The Hexx I am saddened by the loss of what for me was the greatest band of the nineties.<< Wouldn't go that far, but Terror Twilight is a great album. Malkmus' first solo album was a disappointment though. >> Radiohead and Strokes producer Nigel Godrich did a fine job here (as did Jonny Greenwood who plays harmonica on Platform Blues and Billie). >> Radiohead suffer from the same problem - fans who want them to make another "The Bends", something which I don't believe they're capable of any more. That's not a critiscism - they just don't write in that direct style any more, and are a much more interesting and durable band as a result. Distortion is Truth features shorter tracks and is varied, patchy but good and I'd certainly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the Gilbertpossstenger recordings on WMO. The Casco Bay CD of longer largely drone based attacks is simply awesome and totally essential for any drone lover. These have been released by Trace Elements and might be available to purchase from www.dtmgallery.com New Niblock 2CD Touch Food might be his best ever, though some might say he's pretty singleminded. Michael Flaherty will be interested to note that the bass droner played by Kaspar Toeplitz could be even better than that naughty man Jim O'Rourke's hurdy gurdy thingamebob. Picked up some new CDs at ATP: Sunn 0))) CD is marred by silly voice of JCope on first track, good job the daffy dillweed didn't fuck up their ATP set as was rumoured to be in the off. Autechre remixing Seefeel is lovely but new Coil ANS CD is an awesome synthdroner skullfuck follow up to classic Time Machines!!!!!!!! As 99.9 began a seagull alighted outside and cast its beady eye around with a distinct Colin Newman on stage look about it. The bird seemed to be listening to the track and flew off as soon as it finished! Longer review will most likely be www.brainwashed.com/brain on Monday Magic Band were so great I tripped out to London next day to see them again where they were just as magnificent so for me the party ran an extra day. Who should I bump into on nice streets of Wimbledon? None other than Malka Spigel who informed me that her good blokey was off on a promotion trip to Madrid. No, I don't and I feel oddly guilty about it, as though SM is keeping a check on me. A number of reasons really - didn't think much of the last one / had to curtail CD buying activity for a while as I'm buried in unheard stuff / won't be able to see his London gig as it's on over Easter, so no desperate need to familiarize myself with the work. To tell the truth, I haven't even thought of it for a couple of weeks, so it may have missed that window of opportunity that some albums get on release, after which they don't get bought until they turn up cheap somewhere. I'd leap to buy a new Preston School of Industry album though. - --------- I think Pavement matured very well and turned more into themselves as they more or less lost their Sonic Youth/Fall/MES influences (wich I did love also). They were indeed the greatest band of the 90s. The gig was The White Stripes, who were wonderful. By no means plugging the most recent album (#1 with a bullet! - sometimes this country gets it right) - they ranged over their recorded output and played some stuff I didn't know - probably old blues standards. Jack White is a remarkable player and Meg keeps it anchored, although her kit is somewhat augmented from the Gotobed sparseness she apparently displayed a couple of year ago. Only the size of the venue prevented it being a really great gig for me.
