Christ! At the risk of sounding old, it was loud. And as someone who has subjected themselves to such aural abuse over the years thinks, let me assure you ladies and gentlemen. IT WAS LOUD! Actually, the problem was that the sound was atrocious. The band seemed to be giving it their all, but it was perhaps the worst sound I can recall. The drums and vocals were just about audible amongst a swirling din that was presumably the guitars, but the bass was lost somewhere a long way away. It was so bad that when I made out Shelley singing some "oh oh oh's", I wondered if it was something I should know. I was just starting to think that they could play Ever Fallen In Love and I wouldn't recognise it, when they launched into what I was able to identify as a rather appropriately titled Noise Annoys that then segued into another number where they thrashed about in fine form. For the first time I was glad I'd bothered to go. There wasn't much in the way of demand for an encore, but after a few technical adjustments they came back on all the same, but this time with a much improved sound. Personally I could take or leave Why She's A Girl From the Chainstore, but What Do I Get is perfection personified. We also got Orgasm Addict, and though I'll no doubt love that record till the day I die, there was a part of me that couldn't help thinking that there was something a bit creepy in hearing a bloke in his late forties with bleached blonde hair and a double chin singing a line about 'making out with schoolkids'... But to finish it off we got - inevitably - Ever Fallen In Love, and another reminder why we'll always love the Buzzcocks. So, whilst hardly a resounding victory, they just about clawed back a score draw. Bart - the questions (and Colin's answers): 1. Mojo: How come Wire's new material is so fierce? Colin: "When we played at All Tomorrow's Parties in 2000...there was a lot of slowness around. Our set included some stuff that was really fast and....it was piquing people's interest in a way that was definitely not retro. You could feel it on stage. At that point in my mind Wire Mark III was born, because I realised there was a point to it and new stuff had to be written. There was no blueprint - we only knew that it should have a certain intensity." 2. Mojo: What are the benefits of doing things independently this time around? Colin: "What does anyone fundamentally know about old bands who come back? They are shit! If a record company had been involved, they would have put money into convincing everybody that we are not shit. But the Read And Burn eps were put out to create a vibe to make an album possible. We want to make sure that the band doesn't eat itself like it has done in the past and we're creating financial, emotional and physical structures around us so it doesn't have to take that option." Best moment for me though was Bob's intro (again). Did he really say "1979 was also the year of two-tone and tonight we feature The Specials, The Damned and Madness"?
