Well, one good thing about that site is that it's one of the reasons I originally started Wireviews... I've allways thought the "everything after Pink Flag sucks" notion to be as reactionary as it gets. The only thing I liked even less about the site was that "witty" tone all of the time. A few months ago I was reading "You Can't Win," by Jack Black; the book on which William Burroughs based his first novel, and from which he even admits to having lifted sections. It's an autobiography of a professional criminal written in the late 20s and taking place mostly in the latter half of the 19th century. (An interesting book, often dry, mostly because so much is unsaid. Recommended.) A lot of his story is located in San Francisco and many of the locations are still recognizable and familiar to some extent. Reading one passage that might take place in the 1870s Black is talking about visiting the most notorious "wine dump," in town, a low wino bar on Clay Street just south of Kearny. I looked up from eating my Chinese lunch, looked out the restaurant window to gauge how far I was from there, and realized that that was exactly where I was. Spooky. Got my Wire ticket today. Happy happy joy joy. Didn't think so... Found it while poking around on Rolling Stone's website. Looks like it will be in the April 17th edition of the magazine. No stars have been awarded yet, but based on the review, it should do pretty well. Oh yeah - here's the review: Once the most minimalist of England's first-wave punk bands, Wire have lived a maximum life: twenty-six years, including sabbaticals. A mix of new pieces and tracks from a pair of recent EPs, Send is the original quartet's first studio album since 1990, and it is a searing return, a fat, fast child of Wire's ferociously chiseled bamalam on 1977's Pink Flag and the motorized pulse of their 1980s dance-art phase. The album title mocks the triviality of modern correspondence, the exchange of our most intimate and idiotic thoughts with the click of a mouse. But the dirty heartbeat and blood-rush vigor of Send is very human. The best thing to do with Send is receive. DAVID FRICKE (From RS 920, April 17, 2003) Cheers, Paul N.P.
