Haven't seen this in many years, but it'd be in my top 10 too - along with (off the top of my head), the aforementioned JD performance, Julians face solo to the Culture Bunker at the close of the OGWT Teardrops special in '82 and - admittedly this one is peculiar to me - Bolan performing Dandy in the Underworld live on kids TV a few months before he died. Was discussing with three friends yesterday whether the Peel biog is something we'd be interested in and whether it could ever justify the advance. I reckon two of us will buy it and another read it if presented. I'm one of those who'd buy it although part of me thinks I've heard it all already - gosh, shock, JP mentions VD on the radio and is shunned by Marc Bolan after he's famous etc. Is there any fact of his life I don't know? I know as much about the state of his kids' bedrooms as I do my own. But he's been such a key figure in my life (the single most beneficial public figure I suspect, although Stanley Kubrick must be a contender) that I know when faced with the old visage on the front of a book I'll be tempted. He can do what he likes as long as he keeps the tables turning. Is there anyone here who thinks different ? I'm sure Graeme could put it more eloquently but "Top Bloke" will do for me. Switch, which briefly replaced the Tube one summer. It looked better than the Tube - very dimly lit - and didn't have all the up-yer-trouser leg camera shots. As AT Keith says, the Almond/Foetus 'duet' was a great performance. There were also really good performances from Paul Haig and The Undertones I recall. It doesn't instill much confidence in the reliability of ancient history, if the stuff that's happened within our lifetimes gets revised. I'll almost certainly get the Peel book - not just cos I've been a big fan of his show over the years - but also because he is a genuinely witty individual. And I'll be interested in his early years as they involved shopping trips to Chester, which is just down the road from me. Talking of rock biogs, I'm currently reading that Factory/Joy Division/New Order book. I'm obviously interested in the subject, but God...Mick Middles writing is really laboured IMO. Cheers Ian B From inside information I heard Mogwai is playing at the Melkweg same date. I don't know if this has something to do with the festival. Melkweg is not far from Paradiso. This is the web-site http://www.konkurrent.nl But nothing mentioned yet. Elvis's performance is memorable I guess, because he crossed up the Lorne Micheals and played radio radio instead of olivers army, but the programming issues aside, his intensity made a mark. Devo was like nothing else I'd ever seen, and at that time, long before the endless sludge of mindless tribute albums, their deconstructing "satisfaction" was novel. CB was magnificent and shambolic all at once. It's pretty hard for me to come up with anything else on broadcast tv since then that's worth wasting a neurion or two on remembering. bE ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Apr 2003 10:02:53 +0200 From: Bart van Damme Subject: [idealcopy] the 15th (false harmonics) Quite an extensive article about Fisherspooner in todays Volkskrant (one of the main papers in Holland). Lots about Spooner's "Who do I have to blow to get on the cover of the NME" but no mention of Wire/the 15th. Those journalists... Afterwards I was looking for the chords of the 15th and stumbled upon: > "False harmonics" are another story, and more than we can > get into here. But here's a quick teaser lesson: > * Fret a low G (6th string, third fret) with your left hand > * Place your right-hand index finger lightly over the fret > wire at the 15th fret of the same string (which is one octave > higher than the note you're fretting) > * With your index finger still in place, use your thumb to pluck > the string behind your index finger > * You've just created a false harmonic on the note G. Try the > same thing on any other note by placing that right-hand index > finger one octave higher than the note you're playing with > your left. Wouldn't it be hermetic if Wire used these in their song. I would have to find out of course (or did someone beat me to it?)
