His small works will be familiar to those who collect the "various artists" collection that Graham and Bruce have been involved in. A recent show by Hecker had me wondering if the powerbook-noise style had run its course. Unlike post-Niblock minimalism and post-Ferrari musique concrete, where the possibilities seem endless, I have to wonder how much can be done w/ electronic squeeks. The Rehberg piece, which lasted 35 minutes (seems like a long journey from Austria to Chicago to play one 35 minute piece, but never mind), was, if not completely facinating, at least very interesting. The mixture of wordless voices, drones, and pure electronic force (played VERY loudly) perhaps points to some new direction ... we'll see. I don't tend to comment when the list starts to discuss itself because I've never been particularly inconvenienced by any of the content. But the other day I posted a question asking whether or not the opening to Dome 1 was 'clipped' on the master or whether my copy (vinyl) was faulty. Now, I know we've probably all howled into the void here a few times, and not all posts beg a response, and I was hardly kicking off a major on-topic discussion. But I'm *pretty* certain the post hit the list and was a little mystified that nobody here was able or could be bothered to post an answer. Ah well, ne' mind eh? Four stylish looking blokes with cool guitars (a look that drew heavily on Verlaine/Lloyd, but without the heroin chic) playing with the speed and energy of punk but clearly with nods to the past (VU live 69 in particular). In some ways they were Wire with a record collection - and no distortion pedals. Nine songs in 27 minutes. Eight fast ones and 'It's kinda funny'. Not a word to the crowd except "goodnight" at the end. And that streamlined, treble-boosted twin-rhythm guitar attack that was quite like no other before or since. Saw them twice subsequently and they weren't quite as good - they became quite funky towards the end. As for fame, it was never going to happen. They had a hard-wired, built-in disintegration plan. In their comically taciturn interviews (they'd say nothing for 30 minutes, then ask the interviewer "d'you think we're pretentious?" they always maintained it would be one album and then gone, and they stuck to that (though they did record it twice, and release the wrong version). Tim enquired about the live album. It's Ok, and contains two performances one of which is off the mixing desk. The other is a poor audience recording though. The other two LTM CDs (one with the two albums, the other all the singles & sessions) are essential buys though, and I believe James has recently repressed them. The subsequent career of Paul Haig did have its moments - not least a tour circa 83 with a band containing Malcolm Ross, Alan Rankine (associates) David McClymont (Orange Juice) and the drummer out of the Blue Orchids. Sadly this line-up never recorded an album, though they did release a fine version of Suicide's Ghost Rider. But his big stab at pop stardom (the Rhythm of Life album) was such an over-glossed session man wankfest. He just tried too hard. The LTM 'best of' is worth a punt, though a lot of it sounds very '80s in terms of production. As recently as 89 he was touring with Malcolm Ross in the band, and still playing It's Kinda Funny. I wouldn't rule out a reunion - the rhythm section has worked on Ross's solo stuff in the recent past, adn Ross worked with Haig pretty much till he stopped making song-based solo albums (rather than imaginary film soundtracks). But it'd be a hell of a reputation to risk. Will listen to my copy & report back. The only noticeable blooper I know of that stands out in my collection is the CD copy of Phaedra by Tangerine Dream I own.The end of Side 1 on the album fades but on the CD is abruptly ended & doesn't sound right having played the album to transparency ! The only managed to write one track called 'Horses', which was all about the Polo Horses owned by Kenny Jones of The Who, while they were at his studio. Apparently they were called to a record company meeting to discuss their next LP and they played this and got the bums rush. >> I heard this thing by Kenny Jones the other day called 'You're robbing me Mr Brown' - a protest song against the amount of tax the clapped out old git has to pay to the current UK chancellor (40 percent top rate - hardly punitive, is it?). This is something that really gets my goat - see also George Harrison's 'taxman' - ageing swingers posing as rebels while actually being as conservative as the fartiest, tweediest Tory backwoodsman and feathering their own huge rambling nests. Wildly OT but I needed to get it off my chest. Sorry.
