I didn't make it to the Idlewild (minus singer) show, but the Wire comparison is interesting. I did, however, attend the Yo La Tengo show last night and feel the need to recommend their soon-to-be-released album, Summer Sun, that will release on April 8. The band played a lot of great tracks from it at the show. Of course, my favorite moment was their blistering performance of "Deeper Into Movies". During the encore, Yo La Tengo solicited requests from the audience for cover songs, so everyone began yelling song titles. I yelled, "Three Girl Rhumba", and, a few seconds later, someone else a few feet away yelled, "12XU". Of course, they didn't play either song...lol. Other Atlanta shows that I've got on the list to see: Zwan (April 7) ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (April 15) Camper Van Beethoven (April 18) Yes...there's a hole in my wallet in April. I'm considering the Mark Gardner show (vocalist/guitarist of Ride) at Echo Lounge and will also probably try to score Johnny Marr tix this weekend if I can. Not a comparison I can really see; particularly since they carelessly lost their bassist (Bob Fairfoull), anyway. The more cliched comparisons are REM and the Smiths: basically, Idlewild are a competent, vaguely punk-inflected indie guitar band, who you might like if you Like That Sort of Thing (which, for what it's worth, I do in this case - call it a guilty pleasure if you must). Anyway our shock isn't that we don't think it deserves it, its just we often get, erm 'overlooked' by the mainstream music press, anyway you can read the review on the new dedicated Cabaret Voltaire site at mute, http://www.mute.com/cabaretvoltaire/ this site is very much work in progress, and will hopefully be fully finished within the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime keep an eye on the site for all the latest info on the Cabaret Voltaire and Richard H Kirk releases coming up. Here at The Grey Area and across the hall at Novamute have quite a few releases planned, all of which we are very excited about and we hope you enjoy them. Oh and just incase you haven't picked up a copy of NME's single of the week, its still available at the limited cheap price from mutebank until Sunday, (as monday is the official release date) after which any copies we have left will become full price. I never knew he was > that big of a deal--of course it does say "Britain" only. True? Sort of... I mean I'm not sure he 'changed the texture', but he was quite a big deal. IMO anyway. And whilst he wasn't exactly successful in the Duran Duran sense, he did have hit singles and grace TOTP. The Infected album was certainly quite a big deal - doing a whole albums full of videos was unusual in those days and Channel Four showed the whole thing one night. I had liked the little I'd heard by The The prior to this, but didn't have anything by them at that point. And whilst I'm not saying the showing of the Infected video (which I suspect has dated somewhat now) was on a par with The Beatles broadcasting All You Need is Love around the world, it did seem like something of an event. It was certainly a talking point - and was most impressive at the time. The singles off it didn't exactly set the charts on fire - though Heartland in particular was much talked about with it's "51st State of the USA" chorus - but they were minor hits. And the album hung round in the charts for ages. The album also got a lot of publicity down to it's title and sheer timing. By the time it was released, the AIDS epidemic had reached the UK and was obviously big news. Johnson was almost treated like something of a prophet by the press at the time, as if he had foresaw what was about to happen. Moving on to 1989, the weak-ish (IMO) Beaten Generation from Mind Bomb was a top ten smash IIRC. And I've just checked the Hit albums book and noticed that although they didn't exactly over-stay their welcome, Mind Bomb and Dusk (probably my personal fave) were big successes, reaching no. 4 & 2 respectively. And to get back to Burning Blue Soul and the Wire connection, I note it eventually charted in '93 for one week - reaching no. 65! - which at a guess is probably akin to what his last album, the again rather decent Nakedself, achieved. Personally, I think Johnson was one of the most talented writers of his time, but then you might have guessed that already! I never knew he was >that big of a deal--of course it does say "Britain" only. True? I really enjoyed SOUL MINING (my first exposure to The The and the Smiths was a joint review of SOUL MINING and THE SMITHS in MUSICIAN), which has an underdog quality and largely lacks the grandiosity and pompousness that mars later The The stuff. In fact, the next album, INFECTED, was one of the rudest surprises I got from an album in the '80s, since I was expecting growth from SOUL MINING, and instead I got a load of overweening cant masquerading as something with actual meaning. I think "change[d] the texture of British pop in the eighties" is going a bit far, but the way it's written, it can be read as a more limited claim that would be difficult to argue against. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2003 16:14:20 EST From: StephenSwarbrick@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] Re; The The I'm not sure whether anyone recalls but The The were Wires support band at the Notre Dame gigs.
