My daughter has just this minute walked in and said there was no Observer and she'd got the Sunday Times instead! Anyone else out there think that Billy Corgan - or whoever produced Zwan anyway - has been listening to the R&B e.p.'s. I don't say this to in any way invite a Smashing Pumpkins = Good or Smashing Pumpkins = bad argument, cos I'm not particularly a fan myself, but the intro to Honestly has a very similar gtr's on the attack sound as Wire's most recent IMO. You can't beat 5 cd's for $30. I remember when "Eye of Fatima" came out, and saw the video on MTV's 120 Minutes, and after what....15 years? finally indulged my interest in them. So you're not the only Wire fan with an interest in CVB. I'm thinking I might want to check out some of the projects that came out after CVB's demise, and not just Cracker. Like most of the best bands of the punk movement, they defined themselves in opposition to its prevailing orthodoxies. While Wires music was superficially even more basic than that of their contemporaries, they were never submerged in the adolescent anxieties and glib sloganeering that characterised the groups they shared stages with. Instead, the four-pieces 1977 debut, Pink Flag, set fragmented poetry to 21 short, staccato riffs that concealed unfashionably melodic undertones. Wire never claimed to be musicians and were perhaps best defined as conceptual artists whod picked up instruments rather than paints, clay or deformed mannequins. The quartet were postpunk before punk was out of nappies, and their unashamed intelligence meant that the American college bands that emerged in the 1980s like REM, Sonic Youth, Big Black, Mudhoney and the Feelies were quick to claim them as their own. Recently, Blur and the more educated end of the Britpop movement learnt a lot from Wires poised precision, and Elasticas dependence on Wires back catalogue actually resulted in a court case. Last spring, four middle-aged men sitting round the breakfast table of a small seaside hotel were overheard discussing whether the previous nights appearance at a festival at a Pontin s holiday camp had maintained or undermined their legend. It was Wire. And the legend was intact. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Mar 2003 20:07:01 -0000 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Sunday Times article II > Last spring, four middle-aged men > sitting round the breakfast table of a small seaside hotel were overheard > discussing whether the previous nights appearance at a festival at a Pontins > holiday camp had maintained or undermined their 'legend'.
