Something of a departure from their last one by all accounts (the excellent Balls). Talking of reviews, the new Massive Attack LP is - after a couple of plays - much better than some of the papers would have us believe. There's a couple of tracks I really like already. By far their least commercial LP so far IMO - Very bass-heavy, and pretty dark...I like it. IMHO its not so bad - of course not a milestone like their first one. What I really like is the new Calexico album - a perfect soundtrack for the sunny weather of the last ten days. regards, FfB ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 17:49:05 +0000 From: Andrew Walkingshaw Subject: [idealcopy] Unlikely Wire References (continued) From this week's NME[1], pg 16: EXCLUSIVE: `De-grunged' Courtney reveals new album - ... When I saw Spoon live, touring to support that particular CD, they played an excellent version of Wire's "Lowdown". (And, yes, I'm sure it's Lowdown - I had to find my journal from that year just to make sure! I'd have to agree that it's better than reviews might suggest. I wonder if the lack of critical favour is borne of simply comparing it to the reputation that Mezzanine acquired or perhaps resentment at the audacity of Del Naja releasing it as Massive Attack despite the absence of DG and Mushroom. Wonder if they'll have to be referred to as just Massive again in the not too distant future. Get on parade... Cut to AWARDS CEREMONY, as Colin Newman and Bruce Gilbert, clad in Bastard T-shirt and black polo neck respectively, take the podium. Graham Lewis is at home in Sweden tending his daughters and Robert Grey is off tending his plot. "Well, alright, but basically WIRE was always more of a nu-metal band really," explains Colin, overcome by almost no emotion whatsoever. "The thing that they all forgot is that its all in the art of stopping." "Damn," mutters Bruce, "Must be going deaf. Could've sworn he said it was all in the art of droppings. That's why I took the opportunity to make this cup they've given us into a work of ART by filling it with human excrement. Now, not only does it have visual juxtapositions which are open to interpretation by the observer, but there is also the element of smell." Sure enough a pungent stench ruptures the smokey air. "Colin will now demonstrate that a cup can be a bell with the element of smell." Colin strikes the cup with a mallet, sending resonating chinks reverberating across the hall. The Resonating Chinks promptly form themselves into a group and play a song with the riff to Champs. From the balcony a very drunk Mark E Smith begins shouting, "Notebooks out plagiarists, idiot groups with no shape or form!" Colin gets a bit carried away and sends the cup flying, splattering shit all over the assembled ranks of hasbeen Britpop bores. They all fall upon each other, eagerly licking the shit from their clothes. Suddenly Thom Yorke is so overcome by emotion that he bursts into a desperate little bit of cod-operatic hystrionics. "I'm a creep, I'm just so-so, What the hell am I doing here? I don't like shit in me beer! Am I deep? Am I bozo? I'll write an Autechrist pyramid song That sounds a lot more like Elton John" "Pack of mongs!" shouts Mark E Smith pulling out a vintage mauser and spraying bullets into the crowd. Yorke's head is torn in two, and the drummer of Blur is later forced to go solo from his hospital bed. Smith is promptly awarded a lifetime acheivement, which he trades in for a half smoked pack of cigs. Colin and Bruce take the opportunity to slip away to make tracks at Swim studio. No it will be the Strokes variety of Julian popstars . I recall reading they were very 'friendly' a while back. Not sure our Copie ever actually went out with Ms Mad Witch from Hell though he certainly knew her. He refuses to mention her by name in his hilarious autobiography Head On, cos he knew it'd piss her off. (The sequel Re-Possessed is even better BTW) One Cope connected guy Love definitely did say she dated was Michael Mooney (Lupine Howl guitarist who had previously played the wig-out gtr on Jules epic Safesurfer). She maintains she lost her virginity to him. He strenuously denies it. Wonder why.
