Plenty of good press, > and high praise on IC.... And some more coming up right now! Saw Low at the Academy2 (and not the 'small' 3 as billed) at Manchester the other night. I thought they were stunning. To paraphrase the Smiths, some groups are better than others. Well...Low are undoubtedly one of the best. Opening with the beautifully percussive Candy Girl - which surprisingly had some anger management guitar in the middle - they played a truly fab (and lengthy-ish) set . It was a performance of close-your-eyes-brilliance which included my two fave Low tracks - Sunflower and Amazing Grace - where the harmonies were just about as good as it gets. Drummer Mimi deserves a special mention here - imagine Judith Durham if she'd ditched 60's pop and found God! They also played their 'Low almost rock-out' song Canada with a bass sound that (surprisingly) reminded me of the JAMC. Otherwise, it was predominantly a night of slow, quiet songs of almost hymn-like beauty that built slowly and slowly, with an intensity that was relieved only by Alan's occasional slashing guitar and his surprising wry asides between songs ("Anyone here see the Electrix Six the other night. Cool. Were they good?", "Not all of you were at the Star & Garter" and "Anyone here been to Detroit? It's like Manchester...Scary!" ) So what if bassist Zak looks like some b-movie crazy cousin who's out on the lawn with a shotgun looking for those darned kids who won't shut up? Low were beautiful. When the major Metal institutions staked their claim they engendered a whole legion of followers in their wake. These up and coming acts were not simply content to match the volume levels of their forefathers though. Riffs evolved into complex, labyrinthine proportions, vocals scorched higher altitudes and, yes, they even managed to crank out some more volume as part of the formula. Power Metal had been borne. > > The acceleration of aggression afforded by the Thrash Metal movement helped boost the rise of Power Metal. As the first wave of Thrash waned a ready audience of Metal fans lay waiting for something just as heavy but with sophistication. The British guard such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest had opened the door, now a whole flood of American Metal flooded through - Attacker, Jag Panzer, Iced Earth, Savatage and Queensryche. In Europe bands rooted in Thrash matured at an alarming rate with Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Running Wild and Grave Digger establishing lengthy careers. In latter years Power Metal itself has branched off on its own evolutionary trail spawning Symphonic Metal and Progressive Metal. A recent upsurge in the fortunes of bands such as Sonata Artica from Finland, Angra from Brazil and Rhapsody from Italy and illustrated just how global the reach of Power Metal has become. Cult acts from the 80s have been reforming at an alarming rate in order to cope with demand. > > This book documents the full scope of the world-wide Power Metal phenomenon, tracing the lineage of the bands that paved the way, the first 80s wave of bands, the stoic survivors and the new breed and the myriad of spider web like side projects. All with exhaustive, unique histories and detailed discographies. > > Includes free 16 track Power Metal CD > > > > Gary Sharpe-Young > Rockdetector: A-Z Doom, Goth and Stoner Metal > CRBOOK 14 > Laboured, mournful and crushingly heavy. The anaesthetising, sloth like riffs of Doom Metal, the bong fuelled lazy retro Rock that is Stoner and the melancholy strains of Gothic Metal- it's all here. Rooted in ancient instigators such as Pentagram, Atomic Rooster and the mightiest of the mighty- Black Sabbath, Doom has defied all the odds to spawn a huge global fanbase. > > The impact of Doom can be felt not only in the respect afforded to faithful cult acts such as The Obsessed and Trouble but in burgeoning enormity of both the Black Sabbath legend and sheer scale of album sales. The rude health of those that have been handed on the flame, the new breed such as My Dying Bride, Cathedral, Paradise Lost, November's Doom and Candlemass, has morphed the genre into one of their own making. > > In recent years Doom has taken a left turn into the desert wastelands of America and returned as Stoner. Bands like Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Alabama Thunderpussy, Ironboss and hundreds of others pulling in legions of fans. The Europeans meantime added Electronica into the blend to create Darkwave and hordes of Metal bands discovered that adding a female vocalist, a Gothic touch and the introduction of avant garde instrumentation lent a whole new lease of life. Numerous artists placed firmly in genres such as Death Metal and Black Metal readily experiment with Doom and Gothic whilst groundbreaking artists such as Rain Fell Within and Autumn's Tears lend the whole scene ongoing re-invigoration. > > Each and every band is included with an enormous wealth of historical detail and full global discography. From the full, weighty and unedited account of Black Sabbath's tortured history and spanning Stoner, Gothic and Darkwave this book is the first to chronicle the underground world wide phenomena that is Doom. > > Includes free 17 track Doom and Gothic Metal CD > > > > Martin Denny > The Exotic Sounds Of Martin Denny > CRREV 21 > Available again.......one of the jewels in the crown of the original Rev-Ola run.. EXOTICA! The Best Of Martin Denny A product of Martin Denny and his producer Les Baxter, the two lynchpins of the original exotica/space age pop scene in the 1950's and it's more recent revival. EXOTICA! really is the best of Martin Denny, containing his original breakthrough hit "Quiet Village" and a whole bunch of classics beloved of Denny connoseurs from Herb Alpert to Brian Wilson to Genesis P.Orridge. The sound of a future that never imagined by post-war GI's on a tropical island.....Denny's impact on the staid music world of the 1950's and his continuing and growing influence on musicians is acknowledged worldwide, from Don the Beachcomber's and the Shell Bar to your door....Martin Denny! > > > > Maya Angelou > Miss Calypso > CRREV 22 > Maya Angelou is known primarily (and deservedly) as a poet, activist and best-selling author, delivering the poem "In the Pulse of the Morning" as part of President Bill Clinton's inauguration ceremonies. She is far less known for her early career as a singer. In 1957, at the age of 27, she made her only sung album to date, Miss Calypso, which consisted of quite respectable calypso songs with pop and world music influences. > > Very much in line with Harry Belafonte's recordings of this period, and no doubt made with the same lightly subversive civil rights agenda, the album features sparse backing from guitarist Tommy Tedesco ( Top L.A. session musician of the '50s and '60s, best known as a Phil Spector collaborator) and Al Bello (on congos, bongos, and drums), as well as miss Angelous surprisingly effective singing voice. Miss Angelou also wrote half the songs on the album. > > The kitsch masterpiece of a cover features miss Angelou draped in a slip of a red dress, gyrating next to a fire in the middle of a fake jungle scene. Altogether an unusual sidelight on the work of a great and important literary figure, and let's not forget, a damn fine record too! > > > Various Artists > Heaven & Hell - A Tribute To Black Sabbath > CDMZEB 27 > This is the ultimate rock tribute to the legendary Black Sabbath The raw emotion of the most important heavy metal band of the 20th century is harnessed here, on this powerful 15 track homage to Black Sabbath. Some of the United States most well known underground metal bands record their favourite Sabbath track in their own unique way, such as Evil Incarnate "Symptom Of The Universe" and Hate Theory "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". > > > Various Artists Anti-Christ Superstar: A Tribute To Marilyn Manson > CDMGRAM 168 > A brilliant new 15 track tribute to the legendary and infamous Marilyn Manson. This homage to the master of modern metallic goth features today's biggest industrial and dark electronic bands such a Bile, Razorblade Smile, Nocturne and Robert "Spookykid" Pierce all which make it a must have for Marilyn Manson and industrial / dark electronic fans alike! > > > Channel 3 > I've Got A Gun / After The Light Go Out > CDPUNK 2 > Unavailable for over a year this album is bring re0issued due to popular demand! "Gene Clark And The Gosdin Brothers","The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard And Clark", "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" and the International Submarine Band's "Safe At Home" being perhaps the best known candidates behind all this however, are the experiments coming from the "Country" rather than the "Rock" Direction and "Nashville West" is one of the best of those A 1967 live recording of Clarence White's legendary group outside of their session-playing dayjobs at Bakersfield International studios, (where they played with a dizzying range of styles), playing country and R&B in a breathtaking combination of Buck Owens and Garage band attack One can easily hear how The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Gene Clark and many others, coming to see their friend Clarence and his buddies live at the Nashville West club, could have been galvanised into following the Country-Rock path Clarence White, the bluegrass guitar prodigy (who incidentally played on most of the albums listed above!), Soul/R&B loving banjoist/drummer Gene Parsons, Cajun fiddler Gib Guilbeau, and Country singer/humourist Wayne Moore created what was perhaps the first convincing Country/Soul/Rock group ever. White and Parsons of course made the leapinto the post-"Sweetheart...." Byrds, and went on to mainstream country/rock fame in various ways.....but this is where it all began...this is a record that should be owned by any fan of the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers,Dillard & Clark and country rock music as a genre. > > > > Alien Sex Fiend > Acid Bath > CDMGOTH 18 > This album cover has been made famous the world over, due to a character in Tim Burton's film, "Mars Attacks" wearing a T-shirt of the cover throughout the film! This album was the Fiends second studio album and features 11 tracks, including the Indie top 10 single E.S.T. (Trip To The Moon) and includes three bonus tracks not on the vinyl release. Originally released on Anagram Records this popular album has now been re-issued on our successful Goth Collectors series. > > > Johnny Thunders > Dead Or Alive > CRDVD 5N > The only film available of Thunders in concert is outrageous, funny and poignant. It captures Johnny and the Heartbreakers' raunchy rock'n'roll and New York Doll sleaze, giving an intriguing insight into a legend who has been the epitome of the spirit of rock'n'roll. As well as the Heartbreakers concert (with Jerry Nolan, Walter Lure and Billy Rath) the film is undercut with clips of the Heartbreakers on the UK 'Anarchy' tour of 1976 from Don Letts' 'Punk Rock Movie'; Johnny performing solo in the studio; excerpts of Johnny acting in a French feature film ; plus interview footage. > > Since Johnny's untimely death in 1991 (sadly followed by Jerry Nolan's death the following year), many diverse rock stars from the Sex Pistols, Guns and Roses, The Clash through to Morrissey and Primal Scream have eulogised him as a prime influence in their careers. > > Line Up: Johnny Thunders - guitar and vocals Billy Rath - bass Walter Lure - guitar and vocals Jerry Nolan - drums > > > > Tim Rose > Tim Rose / Love - A Kind Of Hate Story > RPM 192 > A Contemporary of Tim Hardin, Tim Buckley and Bob Dylan, Tim Rose has been held in high regard ever since as an outstanding live performer, distinctive "gravel coated" vocalist and successful songwriter. This album has been re-issued due to popular demand! > > > Showaddywaddy > Bright Lights > GLAMCD 16 > Originally released in December 1980 Bright Lights was the seventh studio album from the eight piece Showaddywaddy. Bright Lights spent two months in the UK charts, eventually peaking at no. 54 and as was the norm for the bands LP's it featured a sprinkling of original compositions alongside some choice classics given the full Showaddywaddy treatment. > > This is the first time on CD for Bright Lights and the album includes the UK national hit singles "Blue Moon" and "Why Do Lovers Break Each Other Hearts" as well as the "Always & Ever" and "Doo Wah Diddy" 45's > > Deluxe booklet comes complete with original artwork, detailed liner notes and pictures of all relevant sleeves including many European pressings are a feature of the packaging. > > > > Sudden Sway > 76 Kids Forever > CDMRED 223 > Sudden Sway formed in 1980 and throughout the 80s they mixed art and science into a unique musical world which was always odd and yet politically astute. > > 76 Kids, the "Soap Opera Musical" by Sudden Sway was originally performed and recorded in 1988 and is best described as a seventies version of West Side Story mixed with Brookside. The storyline follows a group of teenage kids growing up in a small town in the Seventies and their attempts to break free of their uneventful lives and make it big in London in the 80s. > > It's a weird mix of the banal and ordinary which seems strangely familiar alongside today's reality TV. But behind this is a real political jab at the enterprise culture of the 80s, which promised such a bright new future. As Ray Mcfarlane says in the show "I will ride on windsurf to wonderland". Says it all really. > > 76 kids was not performed on stage but transmitted live over telephone chat lines operated by Virgin and linked to Night Network on Channel 4. The original album of 76 Kids was released by Rough Trade in 1988. This version released by Cherry Red is identical but with the addition of a 3 minute trailer for the show and is the first time it has been available on CD. Sudden Sway have now reformed and have resigned to Rough Trade. > > Phoenix Family Protection Plan / Sol - Store Detective Man / So, > > Various Artists The Clarion Call > RPMBC 253 > This is the next in release our Bam Caruso series , overseen by Phil Smee. Run by founder and record producer Martin Clarke in the early 60's Clarion was about Western Australia's only label, but it made a big impression on the Oz scene, with a number of singles further being licensed overseas in the US and Uk. Clarion's biggest artist was Johnny Young, and the label was also the breeding ground for the Valentines, fronted by one Bon Scott. > > Clarion was distributed by Festival who eventually took over the Young contract, but the label had enough hits from other artists to keep going until the mid 70's. We have enlisted the help of 'ace' compiler Alec Palao to construct this must have compendium of raw and exciting sounds, from the peak mid 60's period, none of which has been available on CD before. Further assistance has been given by Martin Clarke. > > Recently there have been three other collections of Australian 60's pop rock very successfully released by Ace. Further to which collections of 60's pop rock from other countries such as Sweden, Holland, Spain, Japan have helped create a growing collectors market for 60's World Pop/Rock. The RPM release has no duplicated tracks and a different theme, but fits perfectly into that same collectors genre. > > > Philwit & Pegasus > Philwit & Pegasus > RPM 252 > Philwit and Pegasus was another creation by Mark Wirtz. Encouraged by fellow writer producer Les Reed, who released the album originally on his own Chapter One label, Mark finally got to make a concept album. Most definitely not the Teenage Opera but a wonderful harmony drenched soft pop mind piece, enhanced through the involvement of John Carter, Peter Lee Stirling and Roger Greenaway. > > Not heavily promoted at the time, although championed by Kenny Everett on his Radio Show, where he even made up commercials using Philwit backing music. This first ever reissue is augmented by the non album single and two producer demos Wirtz made at the same sessions . This is a release that taps into several known collectors groups, Wirtz, John Carter, harmony pop , with the original LP increasing in price all the while as the profile among collectors of Wirtz and Carter steadily grows. > > A number of Internet News groups have sprung up in the past 12 months on Mark Wirtz, plus a dedicated web site, and awareness of his back catalogue is growing yet further. This is the first ever reissue of this album, and the first time on CD. Digitally re-mastered with detailed packaging this is a great album for collectors of Harmony Pop LPs or Mark Wirtz, and John Carter fans. > > > > Johnny Cash > Johnny Cash - The Man - His World - His Music > CRDVD 002N > This classic Johnny Cash film is now repackaged and available again on DVD The 90 minute programme contains many very rare clips including Cash singing classic duets with his wife June Carter, Carl Perkins and Bob Dylan. Also included are 21 song performances in many different settings, plus unique footage of Cash relaxing and visiting family and friends. > > Mainly shot on tour in the late 1960's this is a fascinating 'fly on the wall' documentary The DVD contains extra features including: Discography of all Johnny Cash CDs, videos and books currently available; Complete list of all Cherry Red CDs available; complete list of all videos available in the Visionary video catalogue; facility to play individual tracks. It was like someone threw 20,000 volts through my arse." Says Wayne Barratt, Slaughter & The Dogs vocalist. "You see this sea of Punk Rockers in front of you and ask yourself: Is this for real?" > > He was of course talking about the Dogs fever pitched set at the 1996 Holidays In The Sun festival in Blackpool, England. After starting their career supporting Punk legends The Sex Pistols, gaining a prestigious recording deal with Decca Records and being cited by many as forefathers of the 1980's Oi! movement, the band split in the early 80's leaving behind a trail of classic Punk Rock tracks and a string of legendary rumours. > > 15 years later, ready to celebrate Punk Rock's coming of age, Slaughter & The Dogs became the most anticipated act of the 50 band strong Holidays In The Sun bill. "Cranked Up Really High" is the first chance to see the band's amazing performance on DVD, indeed it is the first ever DVD release to feature the band. > > The set includes their classic Punk favourites "Cranked Up Really High", "Where Have All The Bootboys Gone?" and "You're Ready Now". The DVD also features an interview with frontman Wayne Barratt. > > > > Wayne Barrett Interview > Various Artists > UK/DK CRDVD 22 > For the first time ever on DVD, the renowned film capturing the essence of Britpunk in its early days, "UK/DK". Subtitled 'A Film About Punks And Skinheads', "UK/DK" not only includes some excellent live footage and promos from the leading lights of the Britpunk scene, it also documents the era. Full of interviews with band members, street punks and Punk journalists, the film shows how being a Punk became not simply a trend but a way of life. > > The film features some of the Punk scene's most famed bands, such as The Exploited, The Vice Squad and The Adicts, and is a highly entertaining look at Punk in it's infancy. Also featured on the DVD is a documentary on the Holidays In The Sun festival in Blackpool, England from 1996. This film brings the Punk story right up to date, as the festival was held to celebrate Punk's unofficial twentieth birthday that year. Blackpool was to host a spectacular showcase cross section of some of the best names in punk rock. The film has some great live footage from both the stage and surrounding area. Hear what the bands and fans have to say and watch the madness in action. > > > Check out http://www.cherryred.co.uk/newreleases.htm for more information ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 11:11:00 EST From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] Detroit? Any idea if they're reworked R&B tracks or brand new songs? I take it that the inclusion of the R&B material in the vinyl version is confirmation that even the same songs on SEND are significantly redone... Not that we were expecting any less. later, Miles ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V6 #40 ******************************
