Seefeel - CH-Vox (rephlex)....the last Seefeel album and maybe the best...very minimal and isolationist....good to listen to in the dark.... Locust - In Rememberance of Times Past (r&s/apollo)...vinyl only compilation of the very earliest Mark Van Hoen recordings...very eerie The Heavenly Music Corporation - In a Garden of Eden (silent)..excellent ambience from Kim Cascone, Silent records head honcho...still sounds great after 10 years..this should have been released on the Fax label... Tetsu Inoue & Carlos Vivanco - Zenith (fax)..an otherworldly album of soundscapes and lunar antics David Moufang - Solitaire (fax)....Moufang's best offering ever...not so much in the typical Fax label ambient style...more of a hybrid of Fax and the beloved Detroit sound via the icy chill of Germanic minimalism... Model 500 - Classics (metroplex/r&s)....they're all here: Night Drive ..No UFO's....Off to Battle....The Chase..Ocean to Ocean..Sound of Stereo..Juan Atkins finest moments on one compilation... Jeff Mills - Metropolis Soundtrack ...i recently went to see the newly restored version of Fritz Lang's masterpiece (with symphonic soundtrack not Moroder's piece of crap) so i thought i would dig this out....this is a masterpiece in it's own right...Mills eschews the Detroit techno sound in favor of a true cinematic work that is never dull or meandering....works well when watching the film! just don't forget to turn down Pat Benatar and Loverboy the mix could be damaging to your health... Rhythim is Rhythim - all the 12" eps (transmat) -Innovator comp. edited all of these so it was nice to dig out the classics like Nude Photo...Strings of LIfe...It Is What It Is....Feel Surreal...Beyond the Dance....ahh, memories of all those great warehouse parties in Detroit circa 1987-1992... Maurizio - all the 12" eps (the basic channel compilation edited all these as well)..one of the founding fathers of the Berlin techno/dub clicks and cuts minimal techno sound...these need to be heard on vinyl in their longform glory with with the needle physically moving in the groove..the crackles and pops only add to the sound... but never one to stay in the past...here's some new and fairly recent platters i've been checkin' out: Tujiko Noriko - Hard Ni Sasete (Make Me Hard) (mego)...mego's resident japanese popster? ...i think not....this is great stuff...pop but not pop...weirdness lurking everywhere Hecker - Sun Pandamonium (mego) the digital noise monger is back with a much more subdued effort (in places)... Mika Vainio - In The Land of the Blind The One-Eyed is King (mego) ....coincidentally, i was listening to the Dead Can Dance song of the same name just as i recieved this in the mail... Cyclobe - The Visitors (phantom code) ex-coil and death in june members make a stunning noise on their second release...very much akin to Coil's more recent drone and dreamscapes Wolfram Spyra - Invisible Fields (fax)..the long awaited revival of Fax's sublabel (the label where artists other than Pete Namlook release their solo projects)..this is the third in Spyra's trilogy dealing with radio waves and subharmonic phenomyna Stakker - Eurotechno (rephlex) re-issue of short film soundtrack by Future Sound of London member Brian Dougans...this predates the formation of FSOL and is pure ACIIEEED .....great for anyone interested in the history of the acid house explosion... i'll get me Aldi bag, Robert ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Feb 2003 19:49:33 -0000 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Re: Luna/Calla Show According to today's Uncut they're due in the UK in March, although I've not seen any specifics. another the Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: Jason Rogers To: Sent: Tuesday, February 04, 2003 12:13 PM Subject: [idealcopy] Re: Luna/Calla Show > Oh yeah. RICHARD ASHCROFT - science of silence 45 Not as good as the lead single (Check the Meaning) off the new LP, but I still think it's too early to write him off. It might be bordering on MOR, but it's MOR in a Sefronia kind of way IMO. NATACHA ATLAS - ayeshanti LP Yet another excellent album from Atlas. Once again, TGU help out again on this 2001 effort. DAVID BOWIE - young americans / low LP's Two very different, but great LPs's from the Dame's peak. Played Fame to death a few weeks back. As for Low - I love this morethan ever. Bowie fans may be interested in this months Uncut - Ziggy special and cd of covers of his work (Edwyn Collins, Associates, McCulloch, Guy Chadwick etc) NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS - nocturama LP OK this hasn't got great reviews and I agree that it's probably not the gonna end us as my fave NC LP, but if you like him, you're gonna like this too. A looser sound than his more recent stuff. Couple of pretty wild tracks too. DEATH IN VEGAS - dirge / hands around my throat 45s Dirge is their classic single for me. Hands isn't quite in the same class, but it's still a goodie. ELECTRIC SIX - danger! hi voltage 45 Classic pop single alert! And as for the groin & tit lighting up video...that's enough necking. Stop it! I'm reliably informed BTW that the pencil thin moustache was missing at the live gigs though. FAMILY OF GOD - atomic little thing 45 Strange little e.p. from a few yrs back. Every track sounds like it was recorded by a different band. LAND OF NOD - translucence LP Krautrock from Cheltenham! (c/o Ochre records...) LEFTFIELD - leftism LP Esp. Melt. We must be due another even by their standards. LOW - trust LP Esp. ....Amazing Grace - a song of almost unparalled beauty. MOBY - we are all made of stars / in this world 45's 18 is too Play pt2 even for me, but some of these mixes are pretty good. IGGY POP - mask LP track From Beat Em Up, this is Iggy's best track in years. Ferocious in a Stooges/early PIL sort of way. PRIMAL SCREAM - miss lucifer / autobahn 66 45's I thought ML was a great enough single, but the Krautrock influenced A66 (doesn't sound quite right that does it) is sublime. I know a lot of people here hate PS but this is sublime. SMOG - cold blooded old times 45 Inc the acoustic version. SOFT CELL - monoculture 45 Real grower of a single. And the mixes are excellent. The new single (The Night) has entered the charts at #39 and has secured a place on tomorrows TOTP. SUICIDE - wrong decisions LP track American Supreme is a great LP - but this is the killer. Imagine Suicide teaming up with Shaft era Isaac Hayes for an attempt at the Tavares Whodunnit. With Vega rambling over the top like only he can. Funky as hell! T.REX - 'T.Rex' / b-sides 1972-77 For unsung tracks like Childe and The Time of Love is Now (T.Rex) and Cadilac and Thunderwing on the b-sides comp. UNDERWORLD - two months off 45 One of my fave singles of last yr. WIRE - 2002 peel session / read and burn LP track Still wish I Don't Understand didn't have the cluttered drums on the Peel version, but otherwise the session is spot on. As for R&B02's opening track - this has been blasting out of my car on almost daily basis! Love the way it leaves the main riff about 2/3 of the way through and goes into that more spacy instrumental bit... WRECKLESS ERIC - whole wide world 45 Hadn't heard this in a long time, but it still sounds a fab little pop single. Rumoured that Sir Cliff was gonna cover it at one point (God forbid!), but objected to some of the lyrics. There was also a great review for Madame Tinkertoy's Blues Factory in the Newark Advertiser last month: "Album with a blues feel: The first album to be released by the four-piece group Bocca is Madame Tinkertoy's Blues Factory and it is simply divine. The Leicester-based band - bass guitarist Andrew Askey, drummer Dan Hessing, vocalist Ray Parkes and keyboard player Alan Tang - have created a unique sound. Some of the 12 tracks have a slow mellow sound to them while others have an upbeat rock blues tempo. I especially liked the songs Caged and Morning Comes Too Soon, which shows off Ray's deep and husky voice to great effect. Medina Quabos is very bluesy with a haunting violin solo while Inbreeds focuses on the harmonica and is a good track for dancing to. I also like A Mover And A Shaker with its rock beat. The band can be seen at The White Hart pub, Newark, on February 14.
