Subject: [idealcopy] OT: Flaming Lips /TEST BEGINS Everyone you know, one day, will die. We saw Flaming Lips last Thursday night and I must say I was very impressed! I highly recommend them to everyone! Every song was better than the cd and I could understand all of the lyrics. You and me were never meant to be part of the future! The set was kinda short as they went and asked Badly Drawn Boy to play a few of his crap songs before they came on. They didn't play a new song (but did cover Lucifer Sam only minutes after I opined that they were as close as you could get to how Pink Floyd might've ended up if Syd Barret hadn't dropped too much acid). The band was tight, but there was too much time in between songs, wishing folk happy birthday and pondering the imponderable. Did anyone catch them on Peel? I've taped those tracks and they are very good. It's nice to see a band wearing decent animal costumes and showing videos of Japanese schoolgirls shooting each other. The tickets were only #15. I'll go to more shows if we get more good bands in town. Memory Shard: A blue balloon bounces off my head and into the laughing throng... as it recedes towards the overcrowded stage full of fans in pantomime get up, I read the words "It's A Boy" in multiple. There is no escaping the words of WIRE wherever I roam... Flaming Lips became inextricably tangled in my personal WIRE saga in Hamburg, where my friend Ollie was continually blasting the Yoshimi album in his flat before and after we Read and Burnt. It might be the weakest Flaming Lips album (what crazy jacked up summertime bozo decided to omit what should've been the best track - "Funeral In My Head"?) but of course even that's better than 99.9999 per cent of the corporate-ulent surplus aluminium mountain. The only bad thing was some of the crowd. Old men doing the pogo is not impressive. But no one was doing the pogo so it was OK! The two drunken ugly girls in front of me kept turning round to nibble at me nads which got very distracting! They'll be at work Monday saying how great my tiny Texan dick was. Perhaps they shouldn't serve alcohol at shows? Concert go-ers should have a little respect for who's on stage. I'm sure most people there paid to see them and not Badly Drawn Boy. At least I wasn't the oldest one there! Go see this great band if you get a chance! Wayne Coyne is a pop genius, able to take lyrics that seem like the most obvious trite banalities on paper and marry them to gleeful and tragic tunes that make them seem like the most profound truths ever spoken by some mystic oracle. That night "Waiting For A Superman" was the tearjerker, but back in the summertime it was the first time he asked "Do You Realize?" Lightning Strikes the Postman Every Time! In Berlin & Hamburg 'twas more a sumptuous organic vegan feast with fine wines and the company of gorgeous laughing ladies... But I'm sad to say Its Too Late to prey BTW I scored the b&w Brighton photos from Greg Neale, the finest poprocks photographer in the land, that drastically improved Astbury's review. Greg's photos also appear in Careless Talk Costs Lives. Isn't that shot of Bruce fantastic? Not sure why Craig has added incongruous quote marks all over my Berlin review, but I'm sure no one else will actually notice or care. Fergus' review / potted history was a good read but I was left curious about one thing - are the comments about WIRE's 80s oeuvre now the band's party line or do you really think the recordings suffer from the heavy studio process? Compare for instance the awesome timeless flawless immaculate album version of Feed Me to the very ropey live rendition on the Ahead 12". WIRE recordings of the 80s stand tall, head and body towering way above dated old plopbassers like A Certain Ratio and Shriekback. A Certain Ratio? You might well ask Bruce Gilbert to prance about like Mark King! Anyone ever notice how Nemesis by Shriekback sounds almost exactly the same as that I Eat Cannibals novelty song that predated it? If any UK readers would like a prerecorded tape of 'Big Night Music' I will post it to them. It's shit. The Joy Zipper CD-R is also still up for grans if anyone's interested. Date: Sun, 19 Jan 2003 11:19:42 -0700 Greetings friends, Wilco, after a fun little stop-over in San Francisco, arrived safe, sound and on the ground in New Zealand and have now moved on to Brisbane, Australia where they performed earlier today, or yesterday evening depending on where you are and when you're reading this Check out the 'TOURS' section of the site. We'll be posting some photos and first hand reports from the tour in coming weeks, so watch the site. We also want to alert you to several soon-to-be-released side projects involving the guys. First, the Loose Fur self-titled record on Drag City (http://www.dragcity.com) will be available from finer music retailers everywhere on January 28. Loose Fur is a project by Glenn Kotche, Jim O'Rourke and Jeff Tweedy. Those of you who saw their amazing shows at St. Ann's in Brooklyn last December know already -- this is powerful stuff. Next up is the fab new album by the Minus 5. With a catchy title like "Down with Wilco" how can it miss? It hits the streets on February 25. Info and maybe even a track or two are available at http://www.yeproc.com. This semi-star-riddled outing includes the likes of Scott McGaughey, Peter Buck, Ken Stringfellow, Rebecca Gates, and yeah. Wilco (among others). From the always busy hands, feet and mind of Glenn Kotche there are several things in the works: On Fillmore, the instrumental duo with Darin Gray, are working on their third record and have some Chicago area shows soon -- March 8th at the Empty Bottle and April 5 at Nevins (Evanston). Kotche's second solo percussion record "Next" will be released this month on Quakebasket and will be available for purchase through wilcoworld upon release. John Stirratt says to look for the next Autumn Defense record (tentative title: "Circles") this spring and watch their web site for more updates (http://theautumndefense.com) soon. There are two songs to preview up now. Wilco will be doing a handful of US dates (mostly colleges) in late April. We should have some specifics soon.
