Greetings all! I saw two shows last year that I would rate as 10 out of 10. The first was Wire of course, playing at First Avenue in Minneapolis. About 1200 people crammed in comfy, and Wire sonicly cleansing us with "The" one hour set. It was Loud, it was fast, I would have stayed and watched them do it three times in a row. Wonderful! A month later I saw Low play in a 500 to 1000 seat theatre a block away. Low played to a full house. The audience was so quiet you could hear seams straining. At one point Mimi was lightly patting her pant legs as the percussion element of the song. Low played so quietly and so sweetly I realized that they were playing the exact opposite of what Wire is currently doing. There is a broad spectrum between these two bands, and I'm quite happy to read that other Wire fans are not missing out on Low. I'd be hard pressed to pick only one out of those two artists. Yow. I have been recieving the Digest version of this list since the Wire show last September. I have been enjoying the conversation here. In my next life I want to live in Manchester. (I'm a rabid Fall fan as well) Hope this, my first message to the list, finds it's way.... I got back from a really poor gig last night (Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster / The Black Madonnas / Torquamada / Million Dead - wouldn't recommend any of them, although I'd probably have liked Eighties Matchbox more if I wasn't in such a bad mood by then) and my immediate response (after eating toast) was to put the first side of Rock Bottom on, to salve the soul. Nearly 30 years on, still the #1 album in the Knight pantheon, which it has been virtually since the day I got it. On that side alone there are two moments when shivers still run up my spine - in 'Sea Song' when the music shifts after the line 'we're not alone' and Wyatt starts to croon wordlessly; and the merge from 'A Last Straw' into 'Little Red Riding Hood'. A magnificent record. Coincidentally, given the quote about 'never written a rock record' below, what struck me last night was quite how jazzy it is - which is odd as I really don't like jazz forms at all.
