Make a little movie with a specially composed piece of music and stick it up on the website. In that way any that want a small seasonal diversion can go and view it and the rest can just bin it. Saves on trees, gives the overworked postman a bit less to do.. However we have been thwarted by technology and after several hours of nurturing our little seasonal baby we failed to get it online yesterday (the perils of having your website on a secure server, for the technically minded) so I m afraid a bit of text will have to suffice... No, this is not a joke. - -------------------- Frankly, Andrew, the Sonic Mook Expt compilation must be exceptionally good if it's to beat Abba's collected singles. Back in 76 I couldn't distinguish between Dancing Queen and Anarchy in the UK as my single of the year (don't ask me why I have this trivia on tap) but now I'd plump for Abba every time as it doesn't seem to have faded one jot - that swell at the start is one of the great moments in pop. - ------------------------ > Single: again cue the hecklers, but Elbow - Asleep in the Back (which > wasn't on the first issue of the same-titled album). - ------------------------------ A fine single, and Asleep in the Back was my album of the year in 01. Commencing with the inarguable statement "Wire are inarguably one of the greatest bands ever" he then soils himself with the fear that tonight they might display "the obtuse and often bollocks avant-gardism of all those iffy solo projects" rather than the "greatest hits package longed for by the men of no certain age or hairline who skulk among this mixed old bag of attendees". Ahem. But he's cheered by the "hour-long barrage of awesome uber-punk pyrotechnics" which "effortlessly puts the countless sad comebacks of many late peers to shame". Unfortunately his grasp of facts then departs him as he refers to a song called "Spent and Comet", claims the band are "a bunch of 50-somethings" and refers to "worrying Domehead bassist Gilbert teetering on rock posture" and "Lewis almost motionless, a smirking , cadaverous Entwistle" [presumably the Ox now wins in the cadaverous stakes]. If only he'd checked in with some of those men skulking in the audience. The full review may or may not (I haven't checked) be on the website www.carelesstalkcostslives.com Moving to sartorial matters, taken with a tie in the Next sale I looked at the receipt on getting home to find it is called 'Pink Flag Squares'. That Wire is now determining my dress sense is oddly comforting. I'm reading Jonathan Franzen's Great American Novel 'The Corrections' at the moment and was impressed with the following en passant reference - "[His wife's] musical tastes ran to John Prine and Etta James, and so Brian played Prine and James at home and saved his Bartok and Defunkt and Mission of Burma for blasting on his beat box at High Temp" (p403 of the UK paperback). That America's hottest writer has heard of Mission of Burma is also oddly comforting. Came from Worcestershire and sang of local, rural concerns - ruffians, didicoi folk, werewolves and suchlike. A quaint Englishness not dissimilar to that purveyed by current faves British Sea Power. Saw them two or three times in the early 80s. In my current ancillary role as eminence grise to LTM I have suggested them - along with Five or Six and Pink Military - for future releases. Rule of thumb - if it was on an indie label, it's a possibility. If it was on a major, forget it - licencing fees price LTM and their ilk out of the market. Also depends on how "up themselves" the ex-members of the band were. Next up is The Passage BTW - all four albums, plus singles and Peel sesions. As an aside, the Dancing Did's vocalist later became art editor of Q magazine... Mark ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V5 #434 *******************************
