By coincidence Father Xmas brought me the Complete Peter Cook book for xmas. A bit of a comedy fest actually - Eddie Izzard vid, The Office scripts, and Gary Larsens Worm Story ('There's A Dirt In My Soup') - not up to Farside standards, but it passed away a pleasant half hour. On the music front, I got New Orders Retro box set - an entertaining if not exactly definitive collection. Highlights for me are the full version of Elegia (OK a 17 minute instrumental is a bit progrock, but I hadn't heard this version before and I like it a lot) and the prattish sleeve notes from the 'fan'. So he finally realised that NO had made some decent records. What does he want - a medal??? And I hadn't heard tracks like In A Lonely Place, Dreams Never End and Everythings Gone Green in a long time. It's easy to forget just how many great records they've made - though I think it was Let's Go that sounded a bit, well, rubbish. > remember to put plenty of tonic in it Off the 'shorts' completely these days. I lent my copy to someone once and didn't see it again for years. I'd have probably got it again if I'd have seen it - but then ended up getting it returned about 8-9 yrs later! It was great to hear it again - the opening track Winning is superb. And as for the finale (New Dark Age) - I know younger listeners may find the 80's synth offputting, but I love that track (the heavy drum intro is great!) But it's Borlands contributions that stand out overall - great singer, great songwriter, great guitar player. Unfortunately - as has been noted many times - he didn't look like McCulloch, wear a flying jacket like Cope or wave a flag like Bono. Hence failure. Only bought one Borland solo cd - 5:00am which is a solid rather than spectacular affair IMO, but it does feature at least one great track (Kissing In The Dark) IMO. I just wish they'd re-release Alexandria, cos it's not been aailable for donkeys years now and I loved the Beneath The Big Wheel single.
