The first news that I read upon waking up yesterday was of Joe Strummer's
death. Joe Strummer is one of the few musicians about whom we can honestly
say that, if not for his presence, music would not be the same right now.
I spent last night listening to the first Clash album, London Calling, and
Sandinista!; I regret not seeing Strummer live when I had the chance, but
the music will always be here. My thoughts and prayers go to his friends
and family.

Here's wishing a good holiday to everyone here, as I won't be around over
the next few days. Enjoy and look forward to more great music next year.

Jason

loads of strummer stuff in the papers today. 2 whole pages in the guardian
but its pretty predictable stuff (so he wrote should or stay ? i'm
surprised......). the obituarist makes the amazing comment that strummer's
death means shane mcgowan is the only one still standing of the late 70's
songwriters who made such a change to the music scene. apart from a cheap gag
about how often shane is actually standing , does anyone have a clue what
this guy is on about? or maybe he thinks strummer and ian dury defined the
whole era? silly boy. p

Best one was Norman Cook on Sky News. Genuinely moved, fessed up to having
seen the Clash 13 times and an ability to do a (visual) impersonation of Joe.
We know how that goes, don't we kids.

Still taking it in - not often you get genuinely shocking news, and that
certainly was.

Bah humbug to the lot of you ;-)

I wasn't at the RAR gig but I saw The Clash twice - at Manchester Apollo (a
gig from which footage is often shown, shot from the stageside with the
front three moving with an energy which few bands have shown), when the
crowd tore down all the internal decorations and at Hamburg Markthalle in
1980, when Joe took offence at being gobbed at and attacked someone in the
front row with his guitar - I recall the punter being carried out past me,
blood streaming from a head wound. The Clash live was not a peaceful
experience.

I was communicating with a friend of mine yesterday who said his feelings of
loss was tempered by the fact that Joe had not done anything interesting for
years. Which fact is also true from my perspective, but despite this I
still feel a deep sense of loss, partly due to his age and the intimations
of my mortality, only five years younger, but more for what he represented
at his peak. I never fully bought into the Clash mythos - the bandannas and
the combat jackets - and they were contradictory bastards especially in
their relationships with record companies and the USA, but I lived for the
first album and those early singles and for the passion. Which will never
come again.

When I first logged on here back in March I had no idea how much of my time
it would take nor that I would correspond quite as much as I have. But I've
enjoyed every minute. And so what if I'm two seasons behind on The
Sopranos. So thank you all (especially Miles for keeping the whole thing
going). And thanks to Wire for being there and upping the ante. Happy
Holidays and see you in a few days.

another the Keith

Would like to wish everybody on the list a peaceful holiday.
And my special memory of 2002 will be the pre gig drink at Brighton when
members of Wire & their entourage entered the pub & sat down with us for a
drink. That was not an unusual occurance I was informed but it sure was a
special evening for me.I was like a kid again & almost speechless...almost.

agree totally with these sentiments. Not the biggest Clash fan in the
world - Joe was hardly a great singer - but hey, he was Joe Strummer. And
Joe Strummer dying of a heart attack is somehow more shocking than Sid
killing himself after killing Nancy.

When a 'punk legend' dies aged 50, it's just another reminder that,
hey...we're all getting older! Still on a lighter note, I had to smile at
the bad taste email I received yesterday to the effect that "Joe has finally
decided whether he should stay or go!"

Anyway, 2002 has been fun on these pages and I've enjoyed it by the
bucketload. And as Chris said, Brighton was a definite highlight.

And as our Marc once said...

"I'd like to wish you all a superfunk Christmas and a golden new year

YEAH ; )

Couldn't agree more. I missed the boat by not being born at the time -
London Calling is about nine months older than I am - but I remember buying
it in about 1996, just as I started listening to music properly, and playing
that album time after time...

Mark Radcliffe got it right on BBC News; for someone hoping that there's more
to pop music than what there is in the charts, you could do a lot worse
than starting by listening to the Clash.

Terrible news.

And, as it's 23 minutes to go here, on a happier note:

a peaceful and happy holiday season, and New Year, to everyone on the list.
