Apparently they named the album after Heddema's favourite Wire track. I'm going to see them tonight at the Grand Theatre here. This is something of an advance on Uncut and Q who didn't mention them. The pen portrait reads: "After 12 years of silence and scary solo projects, the art-punk kings returned with one of the undoubted albums of the year, albeit split over two eps. Read & Burn was like a blueprint for punk revolution, designed to self-destruct upon playing". Album of the year is - excuse me? - Solomon Burke's 'Don't Give up on Me'. A couple of other snippets of interest from the issue: 1 Mark E Smith has been voted Greatest Mancunian by the readers of the Manchester Evening News. That's not Greatest Mancunian musician. It's Greatest Mancunian, period. And he got 38% of the votes cast. Now admittedly the article doesn't state the size of the electorate, but this is an impressive showing by anyone's standards (other than Saddam and Enver Hoxha). And presumably former band members cast their vote elsewhere. 2 This is going to take some explaining to non-Brits but here goes: Jeremy Vine, a former political interviewer from BBC TV's most prestigious political programme, Newsnight, is to take over a show on historically reviled, but increasingly hip (now they're targeting Baby-boomers and not the over 80 war-time audience) radio channel Radio 2 from the most traditionally revered DJ on the station, Jimmy Young (weekdays Noon - 2pm). JY would normally play Nat King Cole, Sinatra and the like with a bit of Phil Collins thrown in. JV, in a brief interview however, states "I've not pressed eject on my CD player since I stuck The Flaming Lips' "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" in it". He goes on to express his love for Iggy, The Fall, The Streets, Doves and - wait for it - British Sea Power, whose 'Remember Me' he lists in his top ten tracks along with Joy Division's 'Ice Age' and tracks by Magazine, Motorhead, Eminem and Theatre of Hate. Don't be expecting to hear Ice Age on R2 though. We all know Mark & Lard wouldn't be playing most of what they do if they didn't have to. No. But a few years ago I went to the book launch for (Mrs Ian C) Deborah Curtis's excellent book about Ian, and I recall that in her speech she said Ice Age was her kids favourite JD song! But Radio 2 is more likely to play Joy Division than Radio One these days. > > Reminded me - for no good reason - of that really moronic early one. > > They walked in lines, they walked in lines, they walked lines, they walked > in lines.... > > Altogether now! Don't ask me why I > remember this. A very manchester moment on my way home from work yesterday. There is a film crew set up on the platform where my train is stood. But before I board my train I have to wait for Paul Morley to be filmed riding along a travelator towards a waiting camera. Not sure what this was for, but it was a proper film crew with full movie kit.....not a TV thing. From the window of the 1656 to Chester, I watched Paul Morely do several takes, miming to the actual soundtrack of the film, mouthing words and moving his hands to suggest he was saying something very profound....(before I had to get off the train and get on another one because its engine was knackered.) ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V5 #416 *******************************
