I'm going to do everything I can to be there, but I will admit to being somewhat, well, scared... I'm extremely squeamish, so I'm hoping they're not going to go for full-on scare-the-hell out of the audience. I don't rate my ability to cope with that, to be blunt. They were better on Later than I had expected, but as I'd hated that recent single that Radio 1 spent so much time enthusing about, they could hardly disappoint. They were certainly less HM than the Purple soundalike 45 though. > Bart [this week I'll be mostly wearing my fake sleeveless ACDC t-shirt] According to a recent article, the next fashion item is gonna be an MC5 t-shirt. With what I've seen in their Groningen show I wasn't shocked at all. It was just very well crafted and and the ideas seemed quite original. Like I said earlier, they could well be placed in the tradition of Bosch and Goya with these haunting pieces. Yes their work at times is disturbing, but it certainly is not shocking for shocksake. They very much try to deal with modernday topics such as eugenetics, sex/violence and mass consumerism and they use contemporary means to do so. http://www.artnet.com/Magazine/reviews/karlins/karlins12-21-00.asp Though indeed very impressive the Hell piece made less of an impact on me, it being very fragmentated and repetitive, though closely observing I must say it's a stunning piece of craftmanship. They're mainly through their sculptures, but both are excellent draughtmen as well. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2002/10/21/baobj.xml Thinking of this it would probably make much more sense for Wire to "update" Pink Flag here as I certainly hope they will. For an ideal copy we have tribute bands [or backing tapes]. Me neither, though it's not one of my fave NO tracks either - this, however, is more to do with over-exposure at the time (and for some considerable period after), rather than anything to do with the track itself. It's one of those 80's records - like Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag and White Lines - that I never needed to play, because I knew I was gonna hear them more than enough when I went out. This will be limited to 200 tickets per show and they will be available only to Wilcoworld patrons (nice word, huh?). Beginning Saturday 13 November the remaining tickets will be available to the general public through Ticketmaster and at the Vic Theater box office. Unfortunately, we had some problems with online ticketing for the now sold out San Francisco GAMH show Jan 12. We apologize. Using this service was a noble experiment that, frankly, didn't work nearly as well as we hoped. Live and learn -- we shan't make the same mistake again. As we posted on Wilcoworld yesterday, the band are working on an ep for release in late February or March 2003. track listing and more info are available in the 'NEWS' section of the site at wilcoworld. Lastly, there is lot of new stuff in the merch section of the site. Check it out or pass along the link as part of your "wish list". Have a happy & safe holiday, those devilish elves at wilco hq Update your profile or unsubscribe here. Apparently this JR chap [wasn't he shot?] didn't know [what we all know by now] the Outdoor Miner's lyrics were written by Graham. http://www.bigtakeover.com/gbv48.html Bart Here's the excerpt: BOB: Yeah, a lot of people have said that these are the most straightforward lyrics we've had, on Isolation Drills. Well, they are, but to me they're still not straightforward or obvious. I wrote them as poetry, not for songs. I mean, I'm not sure what a "Twilight Campfighter" is, if you're talking about things being not so obvious! JR: I don't know if I agree with that, either. The last time I interviewed you, we were talking about how "Game of Pricks" was so obviously about your rise to the sleazier levels of the music business, and you verified that "My Son Cool" relates to your own son. Throughout your catalog, those who pay close attention can usually see very tangible ideas in your music. But this time out, it seemed like you've spoken more plainly about your life than at any time in the past. BOB: If you want to look at what it's really about, instead of looking on the surface... Some people see a song like "The Cut-Out Witch," and they think it's about a witch -- they just see the obvious. They don't dig deep to see what it really means, that it might have something to do with what's going on in life. JR: And is Wire's "Outdoor Miner" about a miner? Did Colin Newman go down to the mines, and meet some miners? It's almost like people have lost their ability to incorporate metaphors into their lyrical appreciation. BOB: Well, it's just like - I have people try to help me with ideas for covers, and titles, and shit - and they expect the title to somehow relate to the cover. And I go, "It doesn't have to relate." In fact, it's better if the title has nothing to do with the cover. That way you can kind of draw your own conclusions. I don't like when things are obvious, to tell the truth. I like when you kind of have to think about it a little bit. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V5 #415 *******************************
