"odd". It's more the homogeneity of volume of every hit, plus the suspiciously mechanistic timing at points. Of course, the whole of Wire have been fed heavily through Pro Tools, Radar, Cubase or similar: but it sounds to me awfully like Robert's drums are being used as MIDI triggers for samples, or similar, and being possibly (at points) requantised, rejigged in ReCycle, or otherwise treated. (The latter appears to be certainly true of the guitars: I'm wondering quite how much was done by sampling of *sounds* - bars, single chords - and then the later digital composition of these. It's interesting that a process I can guess at being very mechanistic leads to such life-filled results, but hardly surprising: it's the trick Detroit techno learned from Kraftwerk, and Kraftwerk from Stockhausen...) - - Andrew - -- http://www.lexical.org.uk/ | (personal: andrew@lexical.org.uk) Earth Sciences, Univ. of Cambridge | http://www.esc.cam.ac.uk/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Dec 2002 06:43:54 -0800 (PST) From: rayographique Subject: Re: [idealcopy] R+B: Drum Sounds colin has been pretty clear on the point that recent wire recordings have been the most technology driven ever. i took that to mean that it is heavily edited/constructed from raw materials. of course , those in attendance at recent live shows can attest that wire are not a studio contrivance of mr newman ;) another individual noted that RnB1 did not sound particularly good compressed in MP3 either - also, not likely an accident. Wire jams the song and gets licks, rhythms, lyrics, compostion together. 2. All the above are recorded one way or another and fed into protools. 3. The boys (I'm thinking Colin mainly) set about snipping, looping, quantizing, etc. 4. Mixdown and press The question is, does the live version reflect the original jam, the final mix and a hybrid of both?
