I have heard a potential so-bad-it's-good pop classic today. This won't mean much to our American readers, but it's by Ron Atkinson - yep, Big Ron! Medallion wearing, side-parting ex-footie manager now commonly believed to be the worst pundit on ITV. And he's released a xmas single!!! What's it like ? (Well as if you need to ask...) It's shite. Ron's singing voice is just like his commentating voice, with just the odd touch of melody. The emphasis is, of course, on 'odd' and not 'melody'. Steve Wright interviewed him today, but even though BR was obviously still there, couldn't bring himself to play more than a minute or so of it before bringing it to an abrupt end and remaking that he wasn't going to comment on it! Those reports were a grand read, although I suspect some may have found them a little 'selfconsciously arty' but when you're dealing with one of the most selfconsciously arty rock bands around is that much of a surprise? It'd be nice to have more of this Lewis writing on posteverything. Why don't they get him to do the press releases? I see from last weeks digests, whilst generally IC devolved towards an old codgers equivalent of nme.com message board, a chubby clown appointed himself sanity inspector and judged me 'mad as a Lewis.' But who cares what a chubby clown thinks anyway? Colin better be careful with that chicken in his bandolier and Bruce better make sure he keeps that church drawn by dogs under his hat... >>>"First Fast" - I'm going to bet is Colin's. He tends to write abstract lyrics usually (see : his solo records), and this fits the bill. Correct (who's the bastard? gives that one away) "Germ Ship" - I'm going to say Lewis Correct (Planet Earth) best lyric on R&B01 best tune too "Art of Stopping" - A toss-up, I think it could be any of them Not sure on that one, but I reckon Colin - the phrase 'It's all in the art' seems totally Newmanoid. This one encapsulates best Colin's urge to simplify. >>>"I Don't Understand" - Well, it has some of the old "ally in exile" lyrics doesn't it? Not lyrics, but it bastardises the tune, which is one very good reason to not include it on the album. Same goes for First Fast which is too much a son of Pink Flag tunes. >>>I'm not sure at the moment. I'm thinking Colin or Graham. Or Bruce. Its all three of them. I think ts actually the weakest lyric by far. It starts really well but just devolves into some kind of hectoring lecture, although the warlike atmosphere meshes well with the drastically lyrically superior Spent, the cinematic Agfers and Reuters (are all these songs just Reuter-daughters?). I actually prefer Ally In Exile (musically and lyrically). Any guesses as to what that one's about then? And another thing... 99.9 is not an evolution of Zoom, as Mr Bursa suggested. However, a great way to open the album would be the slow build up of Zoom breaking directly into 99.9. Hypnotised... AiE has been through a torturous existence in 21st century Wire. It was scheduled for the RFH set, but they couldn't remember how it went. The attempts to play it led to...Art of Persistence. Which they got tired of, and went bact to AiE, which was reworked and performed just the once, at Edinburgh in December 2000. The reworked music turned up with new words on R& B01 as IDU. I'm really glad I went to that Edinburgh gig - it seems a real pivotal moment, especially Germ Ship, which was also played that night (with shouted, not whispered words). There was the direction. 15 months later and the reinvention was complete. (one would never believe i was at my previous job 11 uninterrupted years ... i've now been fired twice & laid off once in some 21 months). insofar as "reuters" addresses the press, i suppose the following is actually on-topic in a nebulous way ... anyway, the ax fell 7 days before thanksgiving. today would've marked a year on the job. at least the executive editor's streak of running off metro editors remains intact -- 6 in her 5 years here, i'm told, 2 of whom were done after around 4 months. of course, even though this was only 7 days into the 2 months i was given to avoid termination by adhering to the "improvement plan" she dropped on me (with exquisite timing) the afternoon of election day, i guess she couldn't stand the thought of me running amuck before her long weekend commenced the following day, presumably back in whichever circle of hell originally belched her forth. ah, well, up till then i was busier that all get-out, working a string of 50- & 60-hour weeks (including the day on which it turned out that a local liquor-store killing was linked to the d.c. snipings -- i wound up getting face-time on jim lehrer & greta van susteren that night, which was pretty odd), developing a new relationship, making the occasional 16-hour roundtrip drive back to arkansas (the last of which ended with my return a few hours before my 16-year-old deaf springer spaniel died -- it's as if he was waiting for me to come home) ... to the extent that i rarely even turned on this machine. oh, well, trite as it sounds, for once i'm sticking by that old adage that i by god did the best i could, & if that isn't good enough, fuck it (though i don't think "fuck it" is actually part of the old adage). am in a surprisingly good mood, all things considered, not that 2 weeks' severance pay leaves me a whole lot of cushion to job-hunt at my leisure, & not that (m)any jobs up my alley are lying around central alabama (i seem to have developed this unfortunate habit oif buying houses wherever i start working, which leaves me with 2 mortgages even as this is typed) for the asking. either i'm in extreme denial, or the meds are *really* working, or (see above) i'm starting to get used to this sort of thing. dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Dec 2002 00:56:39 +0000 From: Andrew Walkingshaw Subject: Re: [idealcopy] R&B01 Lyrics On Mon, Dec 02, 2002 at 11:33:55PM -0000, Bill Hick wrote: [I Don't Understand] > Its all three of them. I have to agree here: IDU doesn't work that well for me, it's my least favourite track on either of the EPs so far. "Raft Ants" does the spleen thing a lot more effectively from my perspective... but then, I like that kind of hyperkinetic stuff.
