Holiday finds: Jimi Hendrix - studio outtakes of little drummer boy /silent night /auld lang syne and 3 little bears. Rough sounding Jimi novelty 3 track for diehard fans. Mark Mothersbaugh - a Devo style holiday album; a trip to Christmas past? RuPaul - humorous transvestite take on the holidays; my 1st recommended download or CD purchase! The Therapy Sisters - for the tv show "Frasier" fans; dysfunctional family R/x. The Fools - quite excellent holiday fooling around! 2nd recommendation to download or purchase! The December People - curious carols / songs as if done by mainsteam artists. They Might Be Giants - original holiday album taking a giant ho-ho-holiday step; worthy of a sample or download. Ringo Starr - mostly traditional tracks done in Ringo / Beatlesque style; for fans. Lynyrd Skynyrd - surprised me with their southern holiday take; worthy! 38 Special - as with Skynyrd, another worthy surprise find! Chicago 25 - holiday horns in tune! Have we gone retro yet? America - with echoes of their mainstream past, they bring in the cheer! The Hot Buttered Elves - dark (& dirty) jollies; amongst the filthyest holiday downloads available (do it now!). The Fab Four - the best for last: "A Fab Four Christmas" 2 cd set blows the doors off everything else sampled, downloaded, or purchased! Absolute must have recommedation for Beatle fans!! I'm still very fond of the Ze records Christmas album from 81 or so. Not just because of the Waitresses splendid 'Christmas Wrapping' (the only song from it you ever hear on radio nowadays) but also Kid Creole's 'Christmas on Riverside Drive' - which has a groove at the end which never fails to get me going -, Christina's 'Things Fall Apart' - the most depressing Christmas song ever written ("we trimmed the cactus with my ear-rings that we meant to pawn") - and Davitt Sigurdsson's insanely simplistic and bizarrely moving "It's a Big Country", a song about wishing Merry Christmas to his folks around America ("Got a niece down in Virginia / Hard to picture how she's grown / It's your uncle calling angel / won't you put your momma on the phone"). I have a tear in my eye just thinking about it. I've got these on a compilation tape with more typical stuff (Spector - and just how good are Winter Wonderland and Sleigh Ride?) which I normally dig out at this time of year so I hear these songs far more than most and they stand up every year. Time to find it again. In recent years I've been impressed by Belle and Sebastian's beautiful version of 'O Come O Come Emmanuel' and Low's Christmas e.p. I spent Christmas in Florida back in the early 80s and a constantly played song on the radio was 'Grandma got run over by a reindeer' (which continues "coming back from our house Christmas Eve / You may say there's no such thing as Santa / but as for me and Grandpa we believe). A song I've never heard since as it never made it over here. But, God, it lives in my mind like an evil squatter. another the Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: Andrew Walkingshaw To: Sent: Sunday, December 01, 2002 8:15 PM Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT: Holidazed > On Sun, Dec 01, 2002 at 03:08:15PM -0500, Tisbili@aol.com wrote: > > voyteck@webtv.net writes: > > > > << Anyone have other holiday musings? >> > > > > For the Scrooges (like me): > > > > "Hark-uh the Herald Angels Sing" as performed by the Fall. > > "Fairytale of New York"; Pogues / Kirsty MacColl. On the actual compact disc, my copy says, "first edition: 1 out of 1000". Do all of the Third Day cd's have this or are the cd's numbered differently for each one? I'm curious about this, as it's difficult to believe that I would have received the first numbered copy of Third Day from gemm.com. Third Day is a strong collection of songs and I particularly love "Art Of Persistance" (1st draft). _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Dec 2002 18:02:10 -0800 (PST) From: rayographique Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT: Holidazed i concur the hot club of christ finds it's way to my answering machine most years - --- MarkBursa@aol.com wrote: > The best Xmas album by far is the Crepuscule one > (The Ghosts of Christmas > past) from about 1981.
