Nearly didn't make it to the gig...The Hof ter Lo is way across the city from the hotel we were at...& after daylong torrential rain it was near impossible to get a cab to take us...the hotel got lucky with the fifth cab company they tried...and we were on our way through sheets of rain. The driving in Antwerp is chaotic at the best of times... in these conditions, at night, it's terrifying The venue seems to be in an anonymous part of the city right beside an urban motorway, a bit like London's North Circular road... Nothing outside that I could see to advertise the gig. We had been round the Old City earlier and had seen lots of flyposters for various events but not a single one for Wire...began to feel like it was a secret gig... Got the tickets and entered the club to find a generic-modern style bar stainless steel, mirrors etc, not unlike 93ft East..saw a tiny stage in one corner which was setup with a band's gear and on the other side a mixing desk...thought 'fuck me, Wire are playing in this little bar...!!!' So we got a drink (voucher system - buy a wodge of vouchers at a desk for 1euro each 1 coupon = 1 drink, good system, saves making change) By the way it's now 8.30 and I had expected the advertised 2nd support band would be on The bar's getting pretty full by now, mainly 40 somethings, but a good number of younger people (although overall vastly male)...Saw one guy who was with his (I assume) teenage son... A touching display... Then a door beside us opens and gosh! there's the *real* auditorium and BCG is onstage doing his soundcheck It's a fairly big hall, former cinema I guess.... Then some guy comes up and shuts us out again...so it's back to the bar and the beer(s) After awhile hear 'Agfers' so they're still doing the soundcheck.... We finally gain admittance around 9.15 Caught all the Appliance set...I thought they were quite good Wire finally hit the stage at 10.20...and what an entrance, sporadic beams spearing the dark ...99.9 as you know... The rest was the same as Brighton I guess, but I don't think we got Mr Suit (hey, I'd got through a few beers waiting in that bar ) Highspots for me Comet, spent and I don't understand, which I get the feeling is mutating into a shiny beast of a thing... The finale of Pink Flag was thunderous / motorik...just when you think it can't get any faster or louder they crank it up another, unbelievable notch...I was just staring open-mouthed at the blur of Robert's hands at the end...it didn't look humanly possible We stood around while the hall emptied out...awestruck by the show my best wire gig ever?....probably...honed and magnified by intensive touring I guess Went back to the bar for a beer and, fuck me, the *other* support band is playing on the little stage and loads of people have hung around to watch....they seem quite 'shouty' but honestly it's the last thing I need with the sound of Wire still ringing in my ears... Getting back to the hotel in the pouring rain at 1am when the last bus has gone and we can't find a cab well that's another story... later A ************************************************************************* The contents of the e-mail and any transmitted files are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. Found myself a perfect spot in the middle fairly upfront with no giants before me so I constantly had a very good view. It was so very strange and wonderfull to finally witness the band I cherished ever since Chairs Missing came out and whom are responsible for a huge and important part of my life's soundtrack. These last few weeks I've been awfully busy and I didn't have the time to fully enjoy the pre-gig-fun, but boy did this concert kick in! Sometimes I found myself just standing there with a enormous smile on my face. What an energyrush! What a moving raging sea! The two friends who accompanied me were nagging about the wall of sound so I quickly escaped them. No time for nonsense on such a perfect evening. When the concert was over I didn't really feel the need to go and talk to our Wire-lads, [nothing much to ask really after all this beautiful noise], but I would have enjoyed sharing those finest drops of Leeuw-beer with Graham, Jan spoke of! :-) Still recovering now... I think sometime in 2000, I posted about the sheer joy of Wire live -- joy for band and audience alike -- but I'm glad to see some other people having the same reaction to them that I've had. I know I spent considerable portions of the four Wire Mk. III shows I've seen with a huge, dopey grin on my face, in pure sonic bliss. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Nov 2002 13:53:10 -0800 (PST) From: rayographique Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Vera, Groningen - --- Miles Goosens wrote: ... > I think sometime in 2000, I posted about the sheer > joy of Wire live and it just keeps getting fucking better! By Moby-like, do you mean being used in a bland Car advert, or maybe as the soundtrack to a sales-pitch for an IT Consultancy firm? On a visual level, I find most car adverts as appealing as Kelly Osbourne. (This is possibly why I do not own a car). I would not like to hear Wire's comet used in such a way. Unless of course, you mean that the UK electrical goods chainstore Comet, should use it for one of their ads? Now that would be hilarious! "Its Coming Fast.. (adopts Alan Partridge voiceover) ITS THE COMET SALE...NOW ON AT A STORE NEAR YOU..HURRY HURRY HURRY!" P.S. Just looking at Moby makes me want to curl up and fall into a very deep sleep. "Look at me! I put an old Gospel vocal on a really bland backing track...sort of cross between Enigma and Fatboy Slim". P.P.S Moby was on the Frank Skinner show last night, and rather comically was followed by Sir Elton John who was absolutely incensed that Moby had dared to criticise Eminem! Quite bizarre. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Nov 2002 19:21:54 -0800 (PST) From: rayographique Subject: Re: [idealcopy] [ot] no way - --- Tim wrote: > ... I'ts so powerfull I would just like it to be used in mainstream culture, not necessarily only adverts, perhaps documentairies or such. That song says it all. High 'n low culture at the same time - just the way I like it. > On a visual level, I find most car adverts as appealing as Kelly Osbourne. > (This is possibly why I do not own a car). I would not like to hear Wire's > comet used in such a way. I just own a car for transportation. Suppose we could start an arguement here about terrible capitalistic globalism and I would be the first one to have major objections against it, but on the other hand I quite like some adverts and sometimes they even achieve museum-status. I dunno, for me the song just excellently captures the current [post 9-11] state of mind. > Unless of course, you mean that the UK electrical goods chainstore Comet, > should use it for one of their ads? I don't know the chainstore, but I can picture it. Glad Alan P. started again btw... the new series seem a bit different, stranger. I have to watch a few more though to get a proper view. > P.S. Just looking at Moby makes me want to curl up and fall into a very deep > sleep. "Look at me! I put an old Gospel vocal on a really bland backing > track...sort of cross between Enigma and Fatboy Slim". I don't have a problem with Moby. I quite like his music and on a personal level he really represents the duality of modern man. Wanting to be political correct on the one hand and enjoying the good parts of capitalism on the other. But our culture's a bit saturated with Moby now, I'll give you that much. > P.P.S Moby was on the Frank Skinner show last night, and rather comically > was followed by Sir Elton John who was absolutely incensed that Moby had > dared to criticise Eminem! Quite bizarre. Did they really argue/fight? IMO it seems Eminem is just trying to copy that east/westcoast hiphop thang within his little whitie-world. He makes me smile sometimes though. Is his film out allready? Any opinions? Frank Skinner, that strange little manneken, what channel is he on?
