Well, yes. :) I had the opportunity to play Wire ("In the Art of Stopping") at a few people who definitely hadn't heard of it before on Friday, which was interesting to say the least (given two of the audience were funk/hip-hop/jazz fans...) As to why I was doing that, it's the thing I was alluding to a couple of weeks ago: I'm learning how to drive a radio studio prior to (touch wood) hopefully getting a show on student radio. (Yes, it's webcast, if it ever happens). It won't change the world, but hopefully it'll be quite fun... - - Andrew (and yes, I would play Wire tracks, probably quite regularly...) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Nov 2002 11:44:40 -0000 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: [idealcopy] Fw: 6 Music Newsletter #22 08.11.2002 Fans of the Fall, Cure, Pixies and, er, Blodwyn Pig, read on. (aside#1) well it was an excellent turnout from the IC massive , augmented wonderfully by graham and bruce. i always feel i shouldn't go quoting people verbatim but i had a good chat with both and they seemed really chuffed with how the US tour went and really looking forward to the eurotour to follow. great to meet chris , fergus and keith finally ; i think fair to say they were enjoying it all. (aside#2) well i am a great believer in everything being interlinked and in all things coming full circle so i had a huge laugh as wire came on to the sounds of uk decay's "for my country". now when i was about 16 that was the band i used to go and see all the time and i think wire have just overtaken them as the band i've seen the most performances by. knew i'd work out that wire/ukdk link somehow so thank you mr dj. (aside#3) would have loved to have seen a bit more of appliance but the pre-gig drink was not one to leave early from :-) and the gig? well a great opening "99.9" (with the flashlight thing from ATP) but then colin had some grief with his guitar and didn't look too happy with life for "germ ship". but then it kinda clicked and the set was absolutely awesome , best wire performance i've seen yet and the biggest buzz i've had from a gig in years. don't ask me why , i guess its just the tightness of having done it all over the US but boy this rocked soooo well. the audience seemed to get it completely , no hint at all here of "play us an oldie" , the set just works totally as what wire 2002 are about. it just flew by , 12 songs (RnB 1&2 , minus the slowie , plus mr marx's table , nothing older) in what seemed like 10 minutes (but wasn't). awesome. if you're sitting on the fence about going to this tour then it really is your loss , this is a band in unbelievable form. no surprise at all to get an encore , i think the band sensed this was something special. from prior posts i wasn't surprised at reuters/advantage in height (but they killed) , but was blown away by "mr suit". slight nod to the new bomb turks cover methinks , but it ground along beautifully as a wonderful addition to the current "77 in 02" vibe. then of course back again for a "pink flag" , well you had to really. all i'll say is looking around afterwards there were numerous cheshire cat grins from guys who've seen a lot of gigs but realised this was a top band in absolute top form. europe is in for one hell of a treat . wish i could join it. or , put another way , they fucking rocked. p ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Nov 2002 15:14:06 -0800 (PST) From: Santa Cruzer Subject: Re: [idealcopy] south coast shenanigans Paul- Excellent review! Three with torches, one at the mic screaming along to a backing track. This is Wire 2002. This is 99.9. And it's the start of the Brighton show. Or should I say starter? After a brief technical hitch is brushed casually aside, the boys strap on their guitars and in the case of the Artist Formerly Known as Gotobed, pick up their sticks and launch into the main meal. Read & Burn / Read & Burn 02 - the two finest snack sized releases of the year so far, are fed to the hungry lions (come on, go with it!). Raw. And then in no time at all, after tossing the R&B titbits to us for the best part of an hour - and mistakenly thinking we were full - they've gone. Bloody hell. I was obviously hungrier than I thought. Come back you bastards. I'm starving! Wire then wander back on and although there's no Lowdown for dessert, they still re-heat a few old leftovers including Pink Flag and Mr Suit. Hmmm. Tasty! And not wishing to be total gluttons, we let them go... Hilites? Hard to say, because they made the two R&B's sound almost tame in comparison. But I'd go for Graham screaming Agfers of Kodack as if his life depended on it, and I Don't Undertstand and Spent because they're my favourite tracks of the year and they were done to perfection tonight.
