I presume it was at Smartyz (I don't have the book to hand). I saw The Damned there, and I knew the Undertones amongst others played there on their one night a week punk night, but I can't recall knowing at the time that Wire were playing there. Unfortunately. > Can't for the life of me think of anyone > of any note who has played there other than the occasional c n w performance > and The Alarm. Since that theatre opened on the front about 10 yrs ago, there have been quite a few gigs, though they mainly tend to be C&W, MOR, tribute bands or people knocking on a bit shall we say, like Hawkwind, Ian Hunter, etc. A mate of mine - a 40 something seasoned gig veteran - said the Hawkwind gig was that loud he felt sick. > Rhyl's great anyway. Cheapest smack in the UK. As the person who nominated Rhyl as Crappest Town in Britain (on www.idler.co.uk ) succinctly said, "It's where junkies go to die". I honestly can't think of a better description ; ) Incidentally, the most nominated 'crap' town is Hull apparently. Anyone from Hull here? What suprises me is the sheer self-confidence of these kids, which they somehow see as a valid substitute for talent, ideas and original thoughts. They seem to treat having a pop careers as if it is something one can train for, like being an oylympic athlete.Authentic soul vibes can achieved by wibbling up and down the scales like Whitney Houston being prodded with sharp sticks. They recite the mantra "ever since I was two years old I've wanted to be famous....". What does that mean? What is it for? But the real problem facing pop? Too many singers, not enough songs. Where are the songwriters? The latest round of TV Pop Rival Fame-Felchers won't help. More bubbly androids in DKNY tops, ripe for the tabloid destruction in two years time. The great british pastime of build-em-up...then watch them fuck their careers up. > > Good news may reside in reports from a friend who breezed past Waterstones > in Leeds city centre on Friday, where Gareth Gates was apparently making a > personal appearance. Of course this cheered me no end as I gave it a quick blast or three. Bugger off back to beautiful Belgium with a bevvy of Blairite baboons in bondagekeks if it it doesn't sound a fair bit like NWW as fragments of quirkrock are quickly curtailed, voices are timewarped and all sorts of spooky hilarity ensues. Watch him! That's really interesting Tim should mention Gates in the same breath as Morrissey. I've watched him a few times on the telly and thought his performance was very Moz-like. Presumably this is down to him copying the 'moves' of the same early 60's singers as SPM, rather than him being a Smiths fan. Obviously, if GG turns up on TOTP with NHS glasses and a branch sticking out of his back pocket, we'll know othewrwise. I don't like Gates records by any means, but unlike the rest of these Pop Stars/Rivals androids who, as Tim says, just 'wanna be famous', he has something. A spot of star quality.
