Born and bred in Brussels, multi-instrumentalist Doerell now lives in Berlin and has been working on the Dictaphone project for the last three years. Together with Roger Dvring, Saxophone and Clarinette player, he has slowly been developing his version of electronically processed Slomotion Jazz, which is nothing but a collection of beautiful lovesongs. A deep bass meets an ocean full of warm, enchanting melancholy. Colin Newman, Wire-Frontman and head of the London-based Swim Label, on which two Dictaphone tracks appeared already on a compilation, is more than right when he characterises Dictaphone as being timeless, unusual and beautiful. "M.=Addiction" feels like a french autumn dream. Strings are strugggling against precisely placed artefacts and rhythmic noisy bits. Field recordings from public swimming pools meet strange messages recorded with old dictaphones. Maika Spiegel ('Minimal Compact') makes one of the tracks even more beautiful with her unique voice. 'M.=Addiciton' simply makes you drown in a soft, velvety athmosphere. When playing live, Dictaphone transform every club into a listening theatre. Their passionate presence on stage indicates their ongoing search for the magic, melancholic moment. Based around Doerell's loop-sampler, a Dictaphone concert can take off into many different directions, giving Roger Dvring enough space for his unique saxophone and clarinette playing. Roger Dvring was a founding member of 'Moser Meyer Dvring' and has co-written the film score for the film 'Alaska.de' which was a major box office success in Germany. The soundtrack has been released on Kitty-Yo. Things like the Sonic Mook compilation (and the bands thereon), the continuing rise of so-called "post-rock", Wire's current output, and the general geopolitical situation[1], make me think 2003 might just be a spectacular year for music. I can hope, anyway. Anyway, I could well be biased; in a very (very) minor way, I'm about to get involved - or implicated, if you prefer. Won't affect any of you, but consider this a teaser anyway[2]... - - Andrew [1] Disorder can be a very bad thing, but it leads to good music. Extremes tend to, I feel, and I have a worrying feeling we're heading towards a few years of them. This might lead to the idea that music is a driving force for social change: I'm inclined to believe that it's correlation, rather than causation...
