How's this for 'artist'/audience commumication? According the yesterdays Guardian, The Artist formerly known as... greeted his London audience last week with, 'Do you want to hear Purple Rain?' The place then apparently went beserk. 'Well you ain't going to', he 'smirked'. 'You're not here to listen, you're here to learn'. Cheeky bugger. As the journalist pointed out. 'Oh dear. Strange that information was not printed on the #65 ticket'! BTW The new series of Later starts this Friday - guests this week are Bowie, The Coral, Ms Dynamite (tee hee!), Beenie Man and Linda Thompson. Not my bag partcularly, but it's a decent enough single. I was just quoting the lyrics 'Miss Dymati... t.e.'... As much as I like DB, I'm looking forward to seeing The Coral myself. Getting a bit cynical in our old age are we ; ) Actually it'll be interesting to see who the producerof the new series is gonna be. I find the first few pages conjure a similar atmosphere to The Point of Collapse. Considering that James Ellroy books were being discussed I thought it might be relevant to point out that Graham Lewis rates this writer very highly. A couple of months ago I told Graham I was reading Black Dahlia - here's his response: Sent: Wednesday, July 31, 2002 12:47 AM Subject: Re: Black Dahlia Black Dahlia etc. all very good and interesting for their own reasons ..but suggest you fast forward to the latest two (of an unfinished American History Trilogy) start with 'American Tabloid' plus latest..then checkout 'White Jazz' the crucible, where the ideas for this incredible prose were wrought...the last interview I saw of Ellroy....becoming totally pissed off with the interviewer's obsession (lack of further knowledge?) with the 'Black Dahlia-his mothers-murder period-LA' resulted in Ellroy stating he would never accept questions on these subjects ever again....this man has no false modesty or illusions. He KNOWS he's getting better! ============================= BTW Tarwater are in session on Mixing It, Rdaio 3 11pm this evening. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Oct 2002 15:32:44 -0700 (PDT) From: eric719@webtv.net (Eric Strang) Subject: Re: [idealcopy] tops. The last time I saw Ellroy talking about the Black Dahlia was part of a TV programme about him last year. It included a bit where he was sitting round the table with a journalist, lots of retired cops and, bizarrely enough, Nick Nolte. The journalist was also fascinated by the BD case and had conducted vast research into the case - to such an extent that he claimed to have solved it. He named the person he claimed to have done it, specified the suspects medical knowledge and - IRIC - provided a motive. This could explain why Ellroy doesn't feel the need to talk about this anymore. The programme also featured Ellroy speaking to an audience of admirers. What a skilled orator. Mind you I wasn't that impressed with his recent Parkie performance of Life On Mars? - which is possibly my fave ever DB song. Backed only by Mike Garson on the piano, it was too mannered by half, performed in that 'hey listen to me I'm such a great singer' style that seems so prevalent in these post-Maria Carey days. Just sing the bloody song will you. > > I'm looking forward to seeing The Coral myself. > > ////don't mind what i've heard so far , although the video has a huge La's > influence all over it which is none too original. As has been discussed here before, the album is retro in the extreme. BUT...not only do they write good songs, there's a really good feel to the album. Heaven for the Liverpool band fans amongst us...Apart from the R&B cd's, it's my probably my fave album of the yr so far... > ////i suppose all things are possible but its hard ot be too optimistic. such a shame as they could blow it apart. Something like Spent, a relentless thrash inbetween say, the flash of McAlmont & Butler and a headlining re-formed Soft Cell would do me. Dear Jools...
