You're backed up here by my brother who seems to be a fan too. His fave GC movies are Three Kings en Thin Red Line [next to ER]. Well, allright then, I'll reconsider and watch out for either of these films. Perhaps I've judged him too harshly because of the ER-genre wich I don't like. Travelled up from Bath to see it and had to spend the night out on the streets of London before going back - ended up in King's Cross station (not recommended then or now). There was a small 'Gabba, Gabba, Hay' (sic) banner on each seat. Rezzillos and Generation X supported - the former fine, the latter crap. I agree that the album sounds blinding and is one of the great live albums, but it was the least good Ramones performance I saw around that time (about four I think). This may be due to the venue (seated, 2,000 ish capacity for those not familiar with this long-defunct former cinema) and the fact that I sat high up but I was certainly up for the gig. But if only they'd captured Manchester Electric Circus in April '77 - still my personal gig apex as I may have said here before. another the Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: > i had to stick with post punk releases. taking every album ever made into > consideration is way too much pressure for me! and besides, this way i don't > have to contribute to revolver landing at #1, as it probably will. if i went > back another year or so i'd have to consider: > the ramones - it's alive ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2002 11:18:41 +0100 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] [OT] Clooney Three Kings! Yeah, I'd temporarily forgotten that. An excellent film which for the first half hour looks like an experimental movie - weird colours and effects (bullets shot are followed through to their point of impact inside the body). Wonderful clunky mobile phones on display. An intelligent film about the gulf war too. Clooney's fine in it. His role in Thin Red Line is much more limited, but this is a remarkable film, dreamy and unique. Only seen it once and been meaning to watch it again because the impact on first viewing is so strong and strange - it demands repeat viewing and how many Hollywood films can you say that about these days? another the Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: Bart van Damme To: wire-news Sent: Saturday, October 12, 2002 10:01 AM Subject: Re: [idealcopy] [OT] Clooney > > Well, I'm a big ER fan,but discounting this I think his performances in Out > > Of Sight and Oh Brother are first rate examples of romantic / comedy acting. > > > You're backed up here by my brother who seems to be a fan too. They were excellent, and even did that Pink Floyd cover they recently recorded. So I ended up splitting a cab home with someone I had just met, and I got to talking about Wire, in which she responded : "I only know one Wire song - "Follow the Locust" - but it's one of the best songs I've ever heard". Obscure. On an unrelated note, Steven from Bis (of all groups) thinks "Chairs Missing" is "one of the few perfect records out there". ~Michael ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2002 18:25:19 -0700 From: "Paul Pietromonaco" Subject: [idealcopy] Read & Burn your Enterainment Weekly? Hi everyone, Some good news - Wire's Read and Burn 01 & 02 got reviewed in this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly. - ---------------------------- Wire - Read & Burn 01 and 02 (Pinkflag) This pair of mailorder-only EPs has been hailed as a return to the art-punk sound of Wire's revered 1977 debut, "Pink Flag", and sure enough, Bruce Gilbert's familiar metallic guitar clang and Colin Newman's distinctive vocal snarl are in full effect. It's a still-thrilling combo, even if these new songs lack the tuneful pop smarts that made "Flag" tracks like "Field Day for the Sundays" classics. Both: B+ --- Rob Brunner - ---------------------------- Cool, huh? Wire's B+ tied with Nirvana's "You Know You're Right" single, by the way. Unfortunately, they also tied with Madonna's "Die Another Day" single. I haven't heard this one, but I won't have a word said against Madge! OK she's made some turkeys (True Blue, Hanky Panky), but she's definitely made some pop classics in her time. Justify My Love, Like A Prayer, Music even. Worthy of virtually anyone IMO. Come on. Sonic Youth paid homage (though even they couldn't improve on the original). And even Morrissey re-considered. Like she says, Music makes the people come together ; ) Keith ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2002 19:19:18 -0700 From: "Paul Pietromonaco" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Read & Burn your Enterainment Weekly? > > Unfortunately, they also tied with Madonna's "Die Another > Day" single. Okay - I didn't think there was enough interest on this list but, here ya' go! - --------------------------- Madonna - "Die Another Day" (Warner Bros.) Maddy's latest, from the soundtrack to the upcoming James Bond flick, plays like a trippy self-homage. The whirling tune evokes the stabbing strings of "Papa Don't Preach," the hiccuping electro of "Music," and the flirty vocal yearning of "Everybody." The pastiche of jutting sounds, crafted by Mirwais, gives it a dancefloor urgency. And though the lyrics say "I'm gonna destroy my ego," the track begs to differ.
