Some months ago we listed our top 10 Wire releases here and I included both Snakedrill and R&B01 in my list despite the fact that the latter had only been out for a few days. I stand by that early decision. Both R&Bs are wonderful things, all the more so for being unexpected. Long post ahead. So, let me start with the Chicago gig. The DJ beforehand was playing hip electro stuff (Ladytron, etc) but he also played that droll scenester pissoff song "Losing my Edge" by LCD Soundsystem (Sample lyric : "I hear you are buying a synthesizer with an arpeggiator, and throwing your computer out the window because you want to make something real...you want to make a Yaz record"). Milemarker opened in Chicago. They weren't that bad, especially for a band being on boring emo label Jade Tree. They proceeded to headbang and scream tunefully through a synth heavy set and certainly looked like they were enjoying themselves on stage. Wire came on and certainly were on their game. No amp problems or anything, but they did take a long time to set up (amidst some laughter about Bruce's white striped shirt that made him look French). The Metro has an awesome PA, so the whole show sounded professional. "99.9" was bemusing as it was just Colin singing over the backing track while Graham and Bruce twiddled around with their amps, making some mild feedback. But then the show started "proper", and it included the best versions of "Art of Stopping" and "Read & Burn" I have heard yet (even better then ATP). They pushed the latter to the brink of implosion by speeding it up yet another notch. "I Don't Understand" was a bit of letdown compared to the ATP version, but the encore of "Pink Flag" sure made up for that. Right after the gig, my friend and I were off to the Toronto gig but we suddenly found that every hotel in the state of Michigan was booked. By the time we were able to rest in my friend's house near Detroit, it was 8 am the next morning! Hence, I didn't get to attend the Toronto show. Boston was another story. The Middle East has always had a crappy soundsystem with the inevitable outcome of having most of the vocals drowned out by loud guitars. But, I was in the very front row, so it sounded pretty good to me. Oxes came out, and it looked like they had quite a large fanbase here. Numerous people were videotaping the whole show (they also later videotaped Wire) as Oxes walked around the venue with their wireless guitars playing their metallic, ever changing math rock. Oxes are entertaining live, but I can't see how they could translate any of their appeal to record. For the Boston Wire show, Colin had the words for "Spent" "I Don't Understand" and "Mr Marx's table" taped to his amp. I sure wanted to grab those "Spent" lyrics but Colin took them at the end of the show. I did notice the last word was "Spit" not "Spent" though. For Mr. Marx's Table, I was able to remember the 2nd verse word for word : You've come a long way For such a short stay And I'm sad to say It's too late too pray I couldn't see the first verse, but I know it included the line "You've crossed the line". Overall, the main set in Boston was excellent, although Chicago was a bit better in my mind. The Boston encore was the highlight of all the shows, though - The crowd went nuts for "Reuters","Pink Flag", and "Lowdown". Lots of moshing and pushing around ensued. After the show I got to meet and talk with the band which was very fulfilling for me. I was quite excited, and tripped over my words a bunch of times :) First thing I noticed is that how calm and laid-back Robert and Bruce are. Very easy to talk to and friendly. Colin and Graham were a bit more on edge and aggressive. I told Bruce how much I enjoyed the show and if his 15 Organs piece would make it to cd. He said it would, and also recalled that it was very hilarious to do the conducting. When I talked to Robert, he said he was very happy with the live drum arrangements now, but implied that he would probably leave again if things go the drum machine way of "Manscape" again. We got to talking about Melt-Banana too, but that's another story.... Colin said that the Pink Flag label has a lot of archive stuff that is ready for release, but the main focus is the Read & Burns now. Live stuff from the Garage, and the whole Chicago gig (which was recorded) are on the agenda, but these are more fan releases. We might have to wait for mark 3 to end to hear these (or at least to a time of hiatus). Also, when asked if Swim was on hiatus, Colin said there will be a lot of releases in 2003. He's signed a new band Roads that he described as "an angry punk band trapped in a computer". They played them over the PA in Boston and NY and it did seem to be an interesting track, although it didn't sound very swim-esque. Also, Ian from Lobe just sent Colin his finished third album last week, now it just needs to be mixed. No word on any releases from BeatKitten though :( I also met someone from the Brainwashed site (Paul or John, it's all foggy now!) who said he's going to work on the Wire section of Brainwashed more after seeing this show. A couple of other people from the site were there too, he said. NYC I have to say was a bit uneventful besides Colin's amp breaking down mid-song and a heckler proclaiming how genius Bruce was in-between each song. Our Bill Hick would also appreciate the person standing next to me at the show who was wearing an Enon shirt. There are more details, but that's all for now. ~Michael np : Wire - "Mr Marx's Table" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 20:10:24 EDT From: Eardrumbuz@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] accidental club attendance In a message dated 9/20/02 7:55:50 AM, eklaver@elysium-sl.com writes: << one of the guys from Sloan used to be in a band called Black Pool just before they formed (they were all art school types going to NOSCAD) >> would that be something like nova scotia college of art and design? could be, if they sounded like the fall and joy division rolled into one four piece band. at least it's a place to start a search! thanks, paul c.d. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 20:16:53 -0400 From: Superflyww9@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] The Vines http://www.nme.com/features/102973.htm Here's the video I was in. I hadn't heard that they were reforming. I had two kids who were monopolizing my attentions (a good thing) and I was listening to less and less music (bad). I wasn't taking the effort to find out about new music, because it just seemed futile. Snakedrill really grabbed me and woke me up, as far as music was concerned. Fast, simple, intense music. To have Wire #3 come out with this loud fast model makes perfect sense to me. It's not as much of a surprise as Wire #1 and Wire #2 were, because we've seen it coming over the last two years. The surprise is that Wire can remake thmselves yet again into something totally different, and still sound so good. Each version of Wire had a huge impact on me when it first came out. Unfortunately, for me, the first two Wires could not sustain through their lifetimes. Wire #1 ended with Document and Eyewitness, which left me cold after the absolute brilliance of 154. Wire #2 reached a low point with (say it with me) Manscape. I didn't even hear the much better First Letter until recently because I thought they had become irrelevant. So now, I'm wondering how Wire #3 will progress.
