The whole week was dark. That was the only positive note. I remember being really excited about it. It was probably the first time I had went to a record store to buy anything new in too years. I remember the drums really being loud. <> No. Because now there's no breakups nor any darkness. I was visiting San Francisco and I took a look at one of the WIRE websites and I couldn't believe that they were playing again and had released a new CD. I went to Aquarius REcords in the Mission and they had a copy and I bought one this past July. << How do you compare now Wire#1, Wire#2, Wire#3? >> I started getting into Wire about 1981, although my best friend and oldest friend, had their first three records. I knew some of their songs but I probably liked Gang of Four, PIL, Magazine, The Cure and others. I bought Document and Eyewitness and listened to WIRE all that summer. During my senior year of high school they were my favorite band. So then I got into the solo records. WIRE #1 was something cool and something special. They were underrated then. I was into WIRE #2 and got to see them twice live. None of my friends thought much of them at the time. Only some indie people even knew who they were. WIRE #3 is fine by me. It's weird that a band who has put out about 60 records collectively can do something so focused. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 09:44:13 +0100 From: Alistair Tear Subject: [idealcopy] Irving Plaza tonight Tom wrote >>Didn't enjoy scrolling through endless off-topic posts Hey endless off topic posts R us : ) A ************************************************************************* The contents of the e-mail and any transmitted files are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. There was a tape with several things, just a few names written on it with no order or titles. But when I heard 'On Returning' for the first time, just after some wild Lydia Lunch live exceprt, I knew it was Wire. 5 tracks out of 154 : 'On Returning', 'The 15th', 'The Other Window', 'Blessed State' & '40 versions'. Fell immediately in love it, got taped later 'Pink Flag'/'Chairs Missing'/'154' and played them along summer 90', bought the Lp's, 'Document & Eyewitness', and that was all. Got no interest in Wire #2 at this time, it went gradually, but I was keen on Newman & Dome stuff (I have to confess that I still have to put ears on Lewis efforts, quite exciting !). Just bought 'The A List' when released in 1993, loved most of the songs & the 'pop' feel, bought 'The Drill', 'The First Letter', new Swim stuff, then stopped. Jim O'Rourke - Remove the Need (extreme) wonderful drones Non - Might (mute) ..kind of scared to listen to this one at the moment...this is the infamous album that Boyd Rice included a supposed tape recording of a woman being raped..story has it that someone in Minneapolis recorded it from the apartment below theirs while waiting for the police to arrive....the theme of the album is man's penchant for violence and aggression... Tha Avalanches - Since i Left You (sire/modular) ...bought this with sole intention of selling/trading to some (cheesy) dance geeks i know...i am quite sure this cd sucks..i heard one track and it sounded like a happy cheery sampledelic fest...the list of samples used for each song reads like a scroll... John Came - Rythmicon (mute) - already had one of these bought it to trade/sell In The Nursery - Counterpoint - the usual ITN 80's sound...military drums..soundtrackish in places...a bit industrial dance in the Wax Trax/nettwerk vein Carl Craig - More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art (planet E) already had a copy of this grand slice of detroit techno/ambient classic Harmonic Choir - Hearing Solar Winds (ocora) - funny that i just picked this up on vinyl the other day....really interesting record that was made with human voices...sound just like synth washes and drones.... T-Power - Waveform (sour) - i had read about this a few years back and was interested...former drum & bass head turns out a nice album of downtempo electro mixed with a little conspiracy theory paranoia...couple of drum & bass tracks but they are very good and avoid sticking to the same tired formula..."Postcards from Pluto" is one of the finest electro/trip-hop tracks of all time... Tortoise - Tortoise (thrill jockey) i didn't get into Tortoise until Millions Now Living and TNT so i wasn't sure what their first cd was going to sound like...i am pleasantly surprised...it's free jazz, electronic, math rock, all rolled into one....a collection of shorter tracks that never outstay their welcome... Pram - Helium (Too Pure) along the lines of Stereolab, Broadcast, Mouse on Mars, and Tortoise.....pleasant sunny day melodies reminiscent of 60's pop....off key vocals can be off putting at times though... gotta love the bargains... I saw them open for The Birthday Party and Echo [quite by accident, as I was not in the habit of catching openers] They quite frankly stole the show and proceeded to break up shortly thereafter without ever getting a major label contract. Bar/None issued a very nice compilation of what little was recorded called "Heyday" By my recollection Big Dipper was roughly half the 'ment and roughly half as good. - --- John Roberts wrote: > Don't know if anyone remembers a band called Big > Dipper - signed to > Homestead in the US and Demon eventually over here. > I went to see them in > Birmingham once. There was one London gig with the Two Pale Boys when he was really pissed off with them about something. The hip flask has had an increasing role in the past decade, along with the wired apron. Part of the appeal is that you're never sure what you're going to get, but generally it's a pleasure to spend time with the man, a great stage raconteur. My favourite Ubu live moment was sometime soon after the reformation with Ravenstine and Maimone at the Marquee in London (Charing X Road version) when he invited the audience to request songs and he would give people a quid if they didn't know how to play it (he had to give a few away). 30 seconds over Tokyo was blistering that night. I much prefer that version of Ubu to the present one - Ravenstine especially was wonderful with his little box of tricks. another the Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: dan bailey Subject: Re: [idealcopy] ubu gig (was: Daninblack) > i have no previous sightings to compare the gig too, but i was pretty > impressed. am curious, though (did anyone catch the tour's opening date the > night before in nashville? didn't get in till 3 this morning & am getting > ready to stagger to work even as i speak, so can't really go through my new > e-mails to checK), as to whether thomas' on-stage persona is usually as > occasionally truculent (& fond of pulling at a hip-flask), not to mention as > unhappy with the "nancy" mic stand (reminded me of accounts of mark e smith, > actually, esp. when he tried taping the mic into place with what must be > gaffer tape & left the role dangling off). ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V5 #321 *******************************
