I suggest the following possible reasons for Drill no longer seeming relevant to WIRE: 1. More than half the band are bored of it it? 2. It has mutated into nICe streets Above? 3. Edinburgh Drillversion was way more intense than the encore at ICA!!!!! 4. Colin has destroyed Drill with Robert guitarorising as in evidence at ATP and so fucked off I had to ask him the next day if it was still Drill. That version seems to be the ultimate WIRESONG! 5. Someone was shouting very loud for Drill after Pink Flag at ICA. Who could it be? Therefore it might seem to WIRE that playing Drill last has become a predictable move. 6. Some other bollocks. 7. As recently discovered, Drill was written by T Rex in 1969 OK, before it got wrapped around a tree and the Sweet covered it in hair spray goo. 8. Its bits became Stillbird in a very city. 9. Bugger Bugger Bugger 10. Who swallowed jumping mint? 11. Colin's beat machine still faster than Robert, hence ICA Drill seemed a reversion following the Fuck Off Drill at ATP, described as encapsulating 'rave friendly set' by some fuckwit who probably missed the rest (& godspeed) in favour of talking bollocks in the pub. However, it was amusing when I played some recent WIRE live stuff to someone who'd never heard them and thought they reminded him of the Prodigy a lot. Better than sounding like Blur anyway... Spent Peel had big problems finding the play button, or someone had moved his headphones, or he was jerking off over Kenny Dalglish, or he was reminiscing in semi-senile fashion about his birthday or something, but he had a hell of problem making this go. The ol' bugger nearly caught me out, for a minute I was worried the emergency Oasis presale preschool cool payola hit song 'Blur is dead and the Indian Mystical Shit is Smokin' on me Mango Man' might kick in, BUT NO. WIRE was GO! Colin sounded a bit worn out and deadpan on this, not as robotic as the R&B02 version, and totally spoiled the atmosphere by yowling in the middle as if Graham had unexpectedly kicked him in the bollocks. Slower than live, not as heavy as R&B02. My favourite version of this is certainly the one they played at ATP, as recorded by BBC and played by Peel. I also prefer the original set of lyrics and miss greatly Graham's backing vocals. I also prefer Bruce's guitar in its more freeform whirlwind style that partcularly lift this, Read & Burn and Germ Ship beyond in live setting. Unfortunately that's all been reigned in in pursuit of greater precision for the recordings - what you win on the locusts caught peeling, you lose on the monkeys nought feeling. Peel segued it into a Current Value Position Chrome style heavy slo-gabba monster which quickly became boring when the crap vocals spoiled it. Then I taped Aquavista doing a surf guitar version of The Model. (now she's a big success I'd like to meet her a gin) 2. I Don't Understand Weak drum sound compared to R&B01. Band play fine but Colin sounds bored. Barely ignites the way it does live. This also seemed a bit slower than on R&B01. I still think the delivery of this current set was best at ATP, where something had really pissed off Colin and he left the jovial wry delivery in the gutter and spewed pure scornful fire with a real dark look on his face. Maybe biting the bullet isn't such a good idea? However if Colin had to be so wound up to play WIRE all the time, he probably wouldn't enjoy it very much. What you win on the spite inventory, you lose on the sceptic industry. 3. 1st Fast This seemed more like the live fire and seemed even more a Lowdown Surgeon's Girl hybrid than on R&B01. Colin's enunciation of 'Who's the bastard?' was comical. Worth having an alternate version of this. Just after stormin Fist Farts Mary Anne gobshite comes on air at Peel wingding going on about oh yeh wer huh me always love WIRE so much uh! So how come she never plays them on radio? Hole and AC / DC are so much better aren't they? Then again formerly vital HC band descending to crap parody w/ Billy Idol covers is so much preferable for media whores (so many listeners love this, why not ask yr DJ how many liquid luncheon vouchers she earned this weak? Motorolla Payolla? Give de gobshite Coca Cola! Lucky for her Korny Korn had been precious about their live things so she got Dillinger Escape Plan, who it seems might be able to go faster than WIRE... 4. 99.9 Fuckin' brilliant!!! Colin sings words in wrong order, suggesting that perhaps the piece of paper is a useful prop? Only one I really enjoyed more than Helvitis, even if it didn't really equal the menace of the R&B02 version. Anyway, the session would've been much more fun if it had been broadcast before R&B02 was available. It seems Peel is keen to have them back as soon as possible. It'd be nice if they could go back in during October with a set of entirely as yet unreleased tracks which would then be broadcast before R&B03 was out. Peel sessions have been largely a load of shite this year. He's had a few good live sets (Oxes, Low, Nina Nastasia, Breeders, White Stripes) but of the bands I've heard in studio sessions, only Liars and Low have been much cop. So it's not really such a huge compliment to say that this was the best session he's had all year. Yeah: I was trying to find reasons as to why they might be bored. Did anyone else notice how much more elaborate Robert's drumming was on Peel last night than on the record? "Spent" in particular sounded much more guitar-heavy live-beat-group than on the record, which was an interesting contrast. > 2. It has mutated into nICe streets Above? Hadn't thought of that possibility. > > 3. Edinburgh Drillversion was way more intense than the encore at ICA!!!!! Well, I thought that "Raft Ants" on the record had vague echoes of "Come to Daddy"-era Aphex Twin. It's an obvious parallel to draw, though the music is in many ways quite dissimilar - however, it's not a rhythmic style which has crossed over to the mainstream much otherwise. > NP Flaming Lips - I Want to Kill My Brother the Cymbal Head NP XTC - Fossil Fuel (singles 1977-1992): fiver in Fopp today. (That for Paulye) I suggested the list to Paulye and noticed the great participation of the group I thought it best to not be a lurker anymore. So finally I break my silence and come out of the shell. A little about me: Name: Rick Age: 31 location: Salt Lake City, UT Married with two ankle bitters. Favorite bands: WIRE (DUH) U2 New Order Joy Division Swans The Cure Depeche Mode The Smiths BLAH BLAH BLAH you get the idea. I have been a Wire fan since the 80's. I think the first album I purchased was IBTABA, hence the email address. I really have no idea when I started to like wire, it was just one of those things that happened. Me and my friends listened to allot of different bands and we tried to find the ones that were right. We used to treat it as a game and we would find different bands and then introduce them to each other. That is how I learned of the best ones like New Order, Joy Division and of course Wire. I can remember listening to albums at my friends house and wondering who the hell it was, One of them said Wire. The song was "Eardrum Buzz". It really did nothing for me but the other songs grew on me. Then some one played IBTABA and that was it, it blew my kilt off (Once again for paulye). That was it I was hooked. Any way enough about that. I Have just about everything I can get my hands on that is Wire or related work. I definitely think the 80's and on is the best that Wire did. Don't get me wrong all Wire is good Wire, even the weird stuff. As far as the side projects go, Lewis is god. Everything he touches is incredible. He Said and H.A.L.O I think are some of the best albums ever created. I was with Paulye on that trip to Denver to see them and I have to say it was the best concert I have seen. Me and Paul always talked about seeing Wire but never thought it would happen. You can imagine the excitement we had when we heard they would be in Denver. We told the wives that we were going and that was all there was to it. The show was great and I wont bore you with a review because there have already been a few. But I tell you this I would drive another 500 miles for 10 hours straight to see them again. As for the new stuff, what can I say but I think Wire has done it again and proved that they can change and still be great. Well thats all for now, I want to hear "12XU" Rick ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Sep 2002 00:25:00 +0200 From: giluz Subject: [idealcopy] Re: Wire:Giluz, you are.. on 15/09/02 14:52, Ari Britt at luvjazzz@yahoo.com wrote: > .......being missed on the site, everything O.K?Ari > Hey guys. Been meaning to lurk some more but Ari sounded a bit worried - it wouldn't do having him coming all the way to israel to see if I'm alright, it's a dangerous place. I've been literally offline for a long time now, only slowly returning in the last few weeks. I think it's the first mail I wrote for more than a month. Been to the Sinai Desert for a few weeks, best and cheapest vacation ever invented, and now I'm slowly trying to come back to some kind of a more or less stable version of reality (seem to be doing this for the last 30-something years without much success, but there's nothing better to do). So there's no need to worry about me - I wasn't killed in a terrorist attack nor by any hot-blooded Israeli right-winged settler. Contributions for purchasing flight tickets to Europe (Brighton and/or Amsterdam come to mind in particular) in November, preferably during the time when an especially obscure reformed English punk band is playing, would be more than welcome.
