I recognised Wire is playing in Vera. That's the place where Section 25, Sonic Youth, Frack Black, Steve Albini etc. are well-known. Fantastic. Last year the Pink Flag cover band. Now the band themself. And indeed Bart, you can go by walking. Probably see you there. It was as good as the first show in 1987 if not better. Then I had never seen them play. When they played in 2000, they did song like "Silk Skin Paws" and "Drill" and "Boiling Boy" which they had done all three times I had seen them. It was great to see songs like "Lowdown" and "Mercy" but it was over once I was enjoying it. I was sitting in the El Rey and waiting for The Standard. I saw Lewis and Newman walk in. The Standard was okay. When I went back for some drinks I saw Lewis and Gotobed near the mixing board. If you want to meet the band, you should look for them mixing with the audience during the opening act. They always hang out in the back and check out the first group. I saw Gotobed at Variety Arts Center years ago. The LA show was packed. It was fast and loud. They put everyone in a trance. They played material from "Read and Burn 01-02" the two recent EPs. The best songs live were "I Don't Understand" and "Comet" and "Spent" and "The Agfers of Kodack." The stop/start style is very interesting. The microphone wasn't turned on when Lewis sang "Agfers." The drummer Robert Gotobed was great. He was like a metronome and seems like he is mediating. He does amazing things without being flashThe bass player Lewis was like a madman at one moment and a still robot the next. The singer Colin Newman did most of the singing and bobbed his head and danced the whole time. Bruce the guitar player played with his back to the crowd the whole time. There was between song chatter. It was all song to song. This was a better gig than two years ago because it was more focused. Only when they came back for an encore did they play any old material: "Advantage in Height" and "Lowdown" were great. Also "Pink Flag" was a cool version. They said goodnight and left after an hour. Someone threw some ice at Lewis and he was pissed. Wire is like that. Lewis looks like he wants to beat someone up. Newman seems very friendly. Bruce is shut off and indifferent. He is zenlike and hardly noticed. I bought the second EP and now I have both. I taped the gig too to go with my extensive WIRE tape-ology. My friend FRED taped the gig too with his minidisc player. FRED took some digital pictures. Fred and I also went to Pink's later. Thought I would give my review of the Denver show... First of all, I am not from Denver, drove in from SLC. It was worth it fully. There was a bit of delay after Graham blew his bass amp after the second song. To kill some of the time, Colin played a mellow riff on his guitar for about ten minutes while the rest of the lads looked around. Graham eventually left the stage and went to the house guys to find a new amp. Colin finally announces to the crowd "Graham blew his amp about ten minutes ago and we thought if we made some noise it would get fixed" or something to that effect. Great Great show, but then again thanks to a cancellation of their would be opening for Erasure in 91(?) the only Wire gig I have been a witness (to the fact) to.
