I recall they asked for two minutes silence before the gig so that they could get focussed, and people respected it. The only other magog I've been to with that sort of reverential respect was Jeff Buckley which was like being in a church - people just wanted to hear the voice in silence and you could hear a pin drop whenever he started singing (which often sounded like gargling before he got into full flow). And that was a standing venue (Shepherd's Bush Empire) which makes the silence even more impressive. another the Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: rayographique To: Ideal Copy Mailing List (E-mail) Sent: Friday, September 06, 2002 4:05 AM Subject: Re: [idealcopy]gigs > a few come to mind > > the mahavishnu orchestra opening for the phlo and > eddie period zappa band at cobo arena in detroit was > memorable for the sheer impact mclaughlin and co had > on a rowdy detroit (rock city) audience > the sold out arena was literally struck dumb for the > entirety of the set - something i have never seen an > opening act do since > even the security guards were slack-jawed ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Sep 2002 08:49:07 -0500 From: "dan bailey" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] road trip music as noted previously, i heard the song only twice at my friend's (whose band's live cover of reuters i once noted here) house, but the middle section or so where emerge starts "rocking out" is, i thought, quite sublime. dan >It wasn't supposed to read as faint praise - Emerge gives me more pleasure >than anything else I've heard this year that isn't by Wire (although I'm >hopeful of Sigur Ros producing something great from their forthcoming >album). > >another the Keith > >----- Original Message ----- >From: rayographique >To: Keith Knight ; dan bailey >; ideal copy >Sent: Friday, September 06, 2002 3:57 AM >Subject: Re: [idealcopy] road trip music > > >> >> > Fischerspooner's 'Emerge' is a great, great record >> > and far, far better than >> > anything else on the album IMHO. >> >> damning with faint praise >> >> nu nu nu >> no no no >> Yahoo! Don't read any further if you want to be surprised about what you will be seeing the this tour! Since I don't post, I'll give a brief re-intro as none of you know me. I have been listening to Wire since 1990 or so. I like both the 70's stuff and mid-period stuff, just depends on what kind of mood I am in. The only album I don't really enjoy much is Manscape. RnB01 got me kinda excited, but the level of 'sameness' on it really bugged me as wire are so good at being creative and this one didn't show any of that. I am listening to RnB02 right now and it is a hell of a lot better on my first impression. RnB02 is on sale for $10 on the tour, and short sleeve shirts are $15. They are pretty simple in design. A liitle about the show. The show started late as there was some equipment problems, either one of the venue's people was missing or some gear didn't show up. The Standard took the stage. I had dl'ed some MP3s so I would have an idea of what they were like. I liked the MP3s enough, but it was fairly straightforward and I listen to more stuff like :Zoviet France than bands like Wire. The Standard put on a show similar to what I expect Social Distortion might do, another band I really don't like, except the vocals weren't as annoying. They did a good job, just not my cup of tea. After the break, the lights dimmed and an electronic loop started. Colin took the stage and, while holding the lyrics, he walked around the stage all bent over yelling the lyrics. The rest of the gang took the stage and they played a couple of new songs. I haven't had the chance to see wire before, always in the wrong place at the last time for the last tours, so I was quite excited. But, then in the 3rd song or so you could see a surprised look on Graham's face when his amp died. They finished the song and after Graham messed around for a little bit, Colin made an announcement that the amp died. He played an Immersion-like loop on his guitar for a few minutes. Graham was sitting there and Bruce and Robert just watched Colin. After the little guitar interlude Colin apologized for the delay and asked if anyone knew any good jokes. The soundguy put in a CD and the band left the stage. After about 15 minutes, someone came on the PA saying they had an amp in site and things would be going in another bit. Argh! After another 15 minutes, Wire came back. They played 3 more new songs then took a break. I may be forgetting some of the order, but they then played Lowdown and some more new stuff. After these few songs they left the stage for the evening. All in all, about 9-11 songs were played, a very short set, especially when it was broken up so much. After being so excited, I was kinda let down, kinda like when you order a pizza and when it arrives it is burnt. Some of the songs played include Lowdown, 99.9, Germ Ships, Agfers, Art of stopping, & I don't understand. There was one song that Graham sang as opposed to Colin. Mostly new stuff was played. Hopefully the other shows come together better technically. They seemed to get back in the groove after a couple of songs, but then it was over. Enjoy! My abiding memory is of the car alarm that went off just before the gig, and continued right throughout the whole set, despite desperate attempts by Paul Burwell to stop it (he did everything short of throwing it into the river). Z'ev was working with them at the time, which was quite interesting, as I'm pretty keen on his stuff. Went for a few pints of the holy black with them afterwards.... which was nice !! (sorry, this Fast Show joke will be lost to US listers). I much preffered the show they did in the ICA with Bob Cobbing in 1986, called "In C and Air", where Burwell played percussion inside a tank of water (while Richard Wilson and Anne Bean lowered large sawblades in and out of the water), the stage started to clatter of it's own accord, opening to release what seemed like talcum powder, hoovers whistled in the ceiling at the back of the audience, a Renault 4 hung from a rig above the stage started to open and shut its doors violently... plus many other memorable moments too numerous to mention... all punctuated by the larger than life Bob Cobbing bellowing through a fuck off big megaphone... Lucky enought to have seen Test Dept a couple of times: the first in the WOMAD festival in The ICA, in 1983... the metals would have been plenty loud without the PA, but the PA made things very intense... my ears were ringing for a while after that. And then in New Cross in 1987, when they'd really gotten into the theatrics (bugles, projections, flags etc). Also, lucky enough to have seen Einsturzende Neubauten at London University in 1985... very intense... a bunch of skinheads in the audience made for a very tense atmosphere by throwing cans at Mufti, and attempting to push over some of the PA... JD (whose family tree is a stunted crabapple with a vine of poison ivy up one side.) My guess is we all have an interesting tale to tell,my grandads dad was an advisor in the court of the czar,a most unusual position for a Jew,my grandad and his brothe walked from Russia to France and got a boat to england during the pogroms. He was half Russian half Albanian. My Father was half Spanish half Italian, only met him once (around '68) My maternal grandmother was a Catholic of Irish/Scottish decent, she went home the day she met my grandad and told her parents she had just met the man she was going to marry, converted, and secretly taught her children christianity. My step-dad was christian and i had a christian upbringing, even though both my parents were Jews. Last year my brother, sister and i got together for the first time in exactly 50 years.my grandad was hand in hand with the mafia in america and 'the boys' in england,he was a founder member of the BPA and a tough old bastard. My mother sang to the troops every week on stage and radio when we lived in Lybia(I was about 5)the Kings brother fell in love with her and tried to kidnap her,I'da bin a Jewish prince in a Moslem country if she had married him a and no doubt had my throat slit when Gaddafi cam to power. Interesting life innit.Ari Shriek at the world and the world shrieksback http://www.shriekback.com Yahoo!
