More shouty vocals on this one? Less of a rock groove to this one? I think that Trash/Treasure and 99.9 will mean I'll be playing this one more often that R&B1. I too am not quite so sure about distorting the vocals to this degree - the lyrics have always been a key part of listening to Wire for me. But on the other hand I quite like the idea of treating the voice as an instrument rather than a medium through which to convey didactic messages. Maybe so,but if that's the case why do we deride the pop songs of today which are just as naive and just as simple with no 'real message' or meaning Probably did more than any record to wrest control of popular music from the hack songwriters and into the hands of the young artist. agree with Keith on this one,but at least they have the choice,I'll wager brittney has no regrets about being a corporate person, she's certainly not my cup of tea,but if she's earning money more power to her. Here it is! Again! Sleeve is the opposite of R&B1. Typical Wire confusing Wire image inside. looks to me like four mobile phones on chargers, being attacked by mutant geese. Mind you, I still think the cover of The Ideal Copy looks like the Yeti off Dr Who, with car-keys for eyes, resting on a pillow. So I could be mistaken. The 'Smell of You' smells somewhat dissapointingly like some aftershave. What does yours smell of? Still, what a great freebie! The Music? Once again the shout, the dugga and the 12XU beat rules, but this time there is more colour, more depth and at last, more variation in tempo. The basic sound is very much that of R&B01. Is this side 2? (Both CDs would fit on an vinyl LP). Its a heavilly processed Wire again. Read, burnt and electronically bolted together with sharp, geometric, brutal strokes. I not sure whether any of it was recorded with four people in a room, playing live. To me it sounds to me like each track has been built up from loops and samples, much like the remix Colin did using the live version of Lowdown, and his remake of 'Crazy about Love'. "Read and Burn" has Colin on Dalek vocals, stabs of gilbert guitar and a one-note bassline. A good re-opener. "Spent" is more shouty stuff. Colin sustains the gargling, screaming vocal throughout. I hope he knows a good ENT specialist after this next tour. "Trash/Treasure" has a sweet, melodic vocal buried in the mix and is a wonderful hybrid of Wire Mk2, the abrasive guitar of Wire Mk1. It then breaks into the Drilling Wire of R&B1, but with bubbling electronics underpinning the riffage. Its fantastic! "Nice Streets Above", The vocals are reversed on this one, so he could be saying 'Eat more MacDonalds' or 'Spandau Ballet are cool' for all we know. "Raft Ants" is a speed-metal take on 'Kidney Bingoes'. You can imagine a really interesting hyrbrid they could do with both tracks, like with 12DrillU. If Colin brushes his teeth during the instrumental break he might dislodge a filling. 99.9 is the last, and the longest. For once, the song has time to grow and breath. At first this could be a HeSaid tune, but it gradually builds into a ferocious thrash. I must admit to being a little dissapointed with R&B01. A little too uniform. This sounds like a considerable progression from that record. There is more evidence of the Wire that made the 80s stuff, and 154 which is my favourite Wire. Its a more subtle record. Its easier to pick out individual influences here as well, you can hear Bruce, you can hear Robert. R&B01 was a processed mac-attack of Wire samples....but here they seem to have perfected that formula and made something that sounds more rounded and natural. On this form, Wire are still streets ahead of the pack, and have left all their surviving contemporaries way behind. Can't wait to see where they are taking us next! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Sep 2002 23:51:28 -0400 From: Eardrumbuz@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Re: [Shriekback_Digital_Conspiracy] Sorry, this'll work/pt 1.1 In a message dated Wed, 4 Sep 2002 4:19:09 PM Eastern Standard Time, Richard Chilton writes: >Ari Britt wrote: > > > > http://storm.prohosting.com/davech/implants.html > > > >17 out of 20.
