The only other time I've felt that angry watching sport on the telly was when Borg beat an out of sorts Nastase in the Wimbledon final. I think I knew then that he'd never win that event... Worst 'real-life' sporting disappointment, was when Wrexham failed to get promoted in 1977 despite only needing a point from the last 2 games... I stood on the Kop. Gutted. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan, but I reckon he's had an interesting career for an old hippy. Member of perhaps the ultimate hippy act Gong. Almost had a solo hit with George Harrison cover. Produced Simple Minds when they were still good. Embraced new-age chill stuff pretty early on. At least he hasn't just churned out the same stuff over and over like numerous other acts. And he wears such a nice range of head gear. Defending Steve Hillage eh? Must be having one of my Libran days... I never have much time for support acts. Just means you've got to wait longer for the main act. This means Wire will come on about 10. Presumably they'll play for about an hour. Which means only half an hour in the bar afterwards, as the last train back to London is at 10 to 12 (the station is about 20 minutes walk away). Don't like the idea of having to rush off. Is anyone staying in Bristol ? What are the prices like for B&Bs ? (as opposed to R&Bs!). Really looking forward to meeting fellow listees... So, who's coming ? No sleep till Brighton ! You don't miss much do you? (he said, just having shelled out a fiver in Glasgow for the last Mercury Rev thing in double CD pack) Major label releases always turn up secondhand in Manchester before they hit the crappy chainstores anyway. Shoplifting from HMV is another easy option. However its funnier to do the opposite. I used to get sent quite a lot of crappy major label promo CDs (along with the occasional worthwhile one). I'd deface them to make glitty glitch things and sometimes leave them in the HMV racks, amongst the nuclear warheads and organic poison gas cannisters. Its always easy to get a CD-R of the Sonic Youth album off a friend. They release the vinyl versions on their own label anyway. Which leaves very little worthwhile beyond Japan only Boredoms releases, and perhaps a trip to the library to hear PJ Harvey, Flaming Lips, Robbie & Britney. What about the chance to buy all those Cabaret Voltaire tracks again? I'm lucky enough to have never heard any of Hillage's prog stuff. I, like most electronica fans of my generation only know him from his rather splendid contributions to the first couple of Orb albums, and of course System 7 who made really moody, mininal techno records in the early 90s. Good stuff actually. And of course they did a lot of work with Detroit techno pioneer Derrick May....which you can now buy collected on a CD called Mysterious Traveller. Its a belter! he also entered the lexicon of rave culture in the early 90s.....Fancy a Steve Hillage? (Meaning either a pill (pillage) or some hash (chillage).....and what the f**k am talking about?
