They're quite a revelation aren't they Paul? Funny, as I am writing this I'm wearing the BR T-shirt singer Amadeo [his twinbrother Simone plays the drums] sold me at the end of their Groningen gig in 1998 [?], wich was just about the best gig [sorry, magog] I've ever seen! Highpoint was an electrifying embrace between Amadeo and Japanese-American singer Kazu Makino - their two guitars clashing in a sea of feedback while they kissed - oh boy... It's a shame they're often dimissed as a Sonic Youth clone. Sure there are influences, but they can easily stand alone. Together with Pavement I would rate them amongst my absolute fav's of the 90's. If you like Blonde Redhead [AND Pavement] chances are you could also like Sammy - a band I strangely have never heard discussed on this list before. > but being born at 8 a.m. would make my actual time of birth 3 3 and a third About half the number of the Beast? 3;-) Bart ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 04:55:28 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] No No No No No No Mr Suit! From: http://homepage.newschool.edu/~schlemoj/imptopia/venus_bios.html "Jesse Hartman is a musician, filmmaker and actor living in New York City. He is currently putting out records under the name Laptop through Island Records UK. Hartman writes, performs, and produces the material. Before Laptop, Hartman was the singer/guitarist of the band Sammy which released two full-length albums, 3Debut Album2 (Smells Like Records, 1994) and 3Tales of Great Neck Glory2 (Geffen, 1996). As a filmmaker, Hartman has written and directed the short film "Happy Hour2 (Berlin Film Festival Best Short Film, 1993) and co-produced the independent feature "River Of Grass" (dir. Kelly Reichardt, 1995). As an actor, Hartman has had roles in a handful of NYC independent films: "Habit" (dir. Larry Fessenden, 1998), 3No Picnic2 (dir. Phil Hartman, 1989), 3Eerie2 (dir. Phil Hartman, 1997) and 3Venus in Furs2 (dir. Joel Schlemowitz, 1999)." Bart ================================= NME.com: Sammy - Tales Of Great Neck Glory POSSESSION, IT is said, is nine tenths of the law. You own it, you are duly reserved the right to sue the living arse off any git who comes near it. What's this got to do with Sammy? Well the 'it' in question is US alterna-pop, the rightful owners of 'it' being Pavement; and Sammy have allegedly been getting away with murder since around 1993. But is it really that cut and dried? As the 'Babe Come Down' single showed a few years back, Sammy are more than just mere karaoke cat burglars and, as Mark E Smith can attest, Pavement aren't exactly strangers to the art of pilfering anyway. The formula for killer pop music in the '90s is to steal the hook and to fuel the whole ram-raiding process with that precious thing, 'attitude'. So where does that leave today's defendants? Well, if the track 'Encyclopedite' was the only one up before the court, then Sammy's Jesse Hartman and Luke Wood would already be sporting stripes and sewing mailbags. But there are more insidious motives at work here; Sammy's concerns lie with the great American story. Based around Hartman's home town of Great Neck, 'Tales...' spins out anecdotes of egg-eating beat poets and posh girl parties, serial killer wannabes and smalltown rivalries. Such slices of life, along with the other new wave spikiness bring Lou Reed rather swiftly to mind, but they add a bit of welcome surreality - like the bit on 'Neptune Ave' where they express a desire to meet the old feller who wrote their sleeve notes - and the result is a scholarly walk on the mild side. And so back to the dock. The accusation? Using the past to craft a languid, catchy gem with enough smarts to graduate from the University Of Pop. The verdict? Guilty as charged. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 11:28:31 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT: Star signs >No, he's Crawling Keith Snake... Can't recall offhand what Black sang, but if he did indeed miss her soup and bread then he obviously consoled himself on a Big Mac and a couple of portions of chips for the next few years... Bowie may indeed be a wanker - as much as I like him, I recognise he can be a bit of a pretentious twat - but I don't think he's ever cared about sanitising his lyrics. I can still recall how exciting it was at twelve or thirteen to hear a pop star sing "Time reflected like a whore, fell wanking to the floor"! (Youth Club's throughout the country in the 1970's....The sound of table tennis bats dropping onto the table after someone says "Shush. It's bit where Bowie says 'wanker'!") And whilst Cactus isn't the best cover Bowie has ever done - it's certainly not as good as Sorrow or I Know It's Gonna Happen IMO - I still think it's a good version. Maybe not as good as the original, but as I believe they used to say, 'it rocks'... What I remember (since I don't have the CD in front of me...(^_^)) is that they saw this guy walking down the street. He had a very odd walk, and his name was Bailey. Hence - Bailey's walk. (^_^) If you listen to the lyrics, Frank is basically describing Bailey's walking pattern. I didn't mind a few of the early singles at the time, but Spandau soon descended into making some of the mushiest shit I've ever heard. 'True'. 'Gold'. 'Instinction'. Burn 'em! Mind you, Kemp always had ideas above his station. I can still recall an interview he did early '84, claiming Spandau Ballet were the first white pop act to have a dub version of a single on the other side - conveniently forgetting Generation X for example released their Wild Youth/Wild Dub single several years previous... > very distraught that > to his way of thinking , people have not been showing enough respect to the > legacy of spandau ballet. For this I apologise. Sorry Gary. You're a very talented man. You are indeed a great songwriter who keeps Burt Bacharach awake all night. The thing is that there is much less in the way of a cultural taboo about alcohol-induced behaviour than about that induced by other drugs: as such, there's less honesty about alcoholism than other forms of drug addiction, and less awareness of the effects it can have on those who have to deal with the addicted person. > Nothing wrong with a social > drink or three - even medical science now admits that regular consumption in > small quantities can have a beneficial effect on health. "Everything in moderation", yes: people want to escape from reality, and in some cases alcohol or other drugs is one of the escape routes. The problem is not really use, though alcohol-induced violence and abuse is a real problem - it's dependency, which is a somewhat different animal. I don't drink because I, if I'm going to be honest, know I would have a somewhat elevated risk of dependency: and that's a chance I don't want to take, and something I don't want to subject the people around me to. For the vast majority of people, this probably isn't the case: and I'm not about to tell any of you to stop drinking. I'd just like more honesty about the *issues* involved.
