Apologies in advance. WHY is alcohol great? It's a drug, much like many of the others, and in most cases about as destructive. This, I believe, was the origin of what evolved into the (frankly quite scary) straight-edge scene, as created/glamourised by Minor Threat's song of the same name. Of course, Ian MacKaye then went on to Rites of Spring (one of the first bands to be described as "emo" or "emocore"), and then Fugazi. (If this is wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me. Feel free.) However, I don't touch alcohol. Haven't for about two years. (For the USians: the legal drinking age in the UK is 18.) Why? Because once you've seen someone close to you attempt to drink themselves into an early grave[1] over a period of ten years or more, eventually you wake up and realise that a) it's not very fun, really, is it? b) given inherited traits, you're at substantial risk yourself and it rather loses its savour. Alcohol may well be fun for you: so might shooting smack. To be honest, I don't see any moral difference between the two, other than in terms of severity: they're both drugs, and they both regularly fuck up the lives of the people taking them and, *more* importantly, the people around them. If people want to take them, fine: as long as you're not harming those around you by doing so. The glamourisation of alcohol is something I'm afraid I find very hard to let pass unanswered. - - Andrew [1] A parent, that's all I'm saying. - -- "And you see, I kind of shivered to conformity, Did you see the way I cowered to authority?" - Mansun, "Six" ('Six') adw27@cam.ac.uk (academic) | http://www.lexical.org.uk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 04:24:45 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Profilez >>i heard some of the new interpol stuff. i like it better than the e.p., and i heard a live song that sounded even better. i now remember someone telling me they're better live than on record (cd).<< Having seen 'em last night I can testify that they are indeed a fine live band.
