I am pretty appalled that there seems to be so little appreciation on this list for modern punk music. Why not punk rock music? Why should "punk" - loud, fast, simple, energetic music - be any less respectable an art form than the blues? Modern punk encompasses a wide range of styles, from the "boy-band with tattoos" of Blink-182 or New Found Glory, to the antiwar vegan politics of Propagandhi or Anti-Flag, to the youthful speed-goth of AFI, to pick off a few of the more well-known bands. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of bands out there who are taking inspiration from some one aspect or another of the original punk movement. These bands take this inspiration in hundreds of different directions, some of it adventurous, and some more tried-and-true. Who wants to be a "punk" in 2002? Lots of people. It doesn't mean the same thing that it did in 1977. For some it is just faddish passing fancy, for some it springs from a more serious musical interest, and for some it is a template for a lifestyle apart from the soulless consumerist mainstream. Punk bands today have preserved the style, the energy, and in some cases, the fashion of the old school and made it their own. Who cares what "actual Punk" was? I am (unfortunately) old enough to have lived through that era, and an exciting time it was, but outside of the history and the inpiration, how is that relevant today? Who cares that today's more experimental bands are not called "punk"? Who cares that today's punk bands can't possibly be reacting to the same historical situation? There are lots of bands who would sooner join the Taliban than sign with Sony. There are bands who have made lives in music for themselves and others without coming anywhere near MTV or the major labels. DIY is more alive than ever, and not everyone wants to be Green Day. Anyone who considers punk rock in 2002 to be dead, and applauds it, is both blind and deaf. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Aug 2002 14:24:22 -0700 (PDT) From: Ari Britt Subject: [idealcopy] Fwd:OT UnReality TV: Bush's Sham Economic Forum - --- Democratic Party wrote: > Date: 17 Aug 2002 17:15:26 -0000 > From: "Democratic Party" > > To: > Subject: UnReality TV: Bush's Sham Economic Forum > > Democratic News > > BUSH HEARS NO DISSENT AT STAGED ECONOMIC FORUM > > At a carefully staged economic forum held in Waco, > Texas, President Bush heard no dissent from the > attendees, who were invited because of their support > for Bush's stagnant economic policies.
