While I agree with this in general - weren't both Wire and Neubauten on Mute some time ago? Isn't Mute supposed to be artist-friendly and Mute's owner to be a personal friend of some Wire members? It's OK for Wire to have their own label (since Colin mastered his business skills in Swim for quite some years), but I don't think every artist has to go without a label. Artists should be recording and label owners should be taking care of details - pressing, printing, distribution, etc. Doing it all yourself is a great attitude, but might detract the artist from art. I'm sure you're actually more in a position to find out about 'punk rock' than many of the other regular posters to this list, living in Manchester where there are many punk rock gigs (which you never go to), but lets not get bogged down in the what is punk discussion that Gil & I did to death about a year ago, I just don't have the energy to fight a pointless rearguard action against people whose contact with the punk/hardcore scene effectively largely ended around 20 years ago. Andrew was asking the question of what punk is and Paul R said read Englands Dreaming. This book is useful for a historic tread through the story the Pistols were at the centre of, but if you buy the convenient media lie / line that he peddles, that punk was over around the time that book finishes you are making a BIG MISTAKE All that really happened is that Savage's interest in it died. There was another book of a more sociological angle written afterwards, which had 2 mentions of WIRE & that photo of Colin barefoot but I forget the title & editor now. It was a collection of writings by various key punchers. It came from the opposing position that punk continued to mutate and thrive long after the Pistols explosion died down. Which perhaps brings us back to angry hip hop kids observed by Indestructible Kid. Other useful books - Our Band Could Be Your Life (Michael Azerrad) Dance of Days (Mark Anderson) But I can't stress this strongly enough You won't find 'essence of punk' (whatever that is) in a book. You certainly won't find it in a glossy monthly magazine. Maybe you'll find it at a gig in a semi-secret location, advertised by word of mouth, where everyone bands and 'fans' get to know each other a little better each time and everyone organises their own alternatives to the crap we're force fed in the name of spectacular entertainment. Last night I was at such an event where three fine bands (Redbank [of the Wirral], This Ain't Vegas [of Sunderland] & And None of Them Knew They Were Robots [of Leeds]) rocked my world. Or maybe you'll find it in a small comic written by an anarchist girl from Brighton? Or maybe you'll find it a WIRE gig? A-ha, you didn't look closely! If you move through U2's gigography, you'll see that some of the setlists are missing. Especially for the early shows, pre-1980. That's why it's not listed. My current recollection is that they played Mannequin in 1978. FYI they were also playing "Another Girl Another Planet". Ugh. The bad news is that a live recording might not exist.
