So despite not doing anything new that hasn't been done many times before, they manage to sound like they're influenced by three bands who don't really sound much like each other at all? I can hear a mere hint of Birthday Party on one Oxes track, but... Sonic Youth???? I always suspected dr robert fans were deaf... They remind me mostly of Don Caballero (especially the first DC album) At ATP I thought of Shellac But the records don't really sound much like them This might've been partly due to the visual spectacle of the hole in the head guitars, and a similar cutting guitar sound also very tight dynamics but Shellac have cleverer fiddly bits! I asked one of them (Nate) if Shellac were a big influence. He said he liked them a lot but the other 2 Oxes hadn't really listened to them (a typical influences response). Oxes also remind me of AC/DC if you took out all the pussy ass shit (mostly the warble balls cod opera) then tightened it up a lot. They sound about as much like Sonic Youth as Liars do the Strokes (amusingly some shmuck has written a review that can be found at www.liarsliarsliars.com comparing Liars to Strokes, probably just because they're based in NYC - DOH!) On the cover of the second CD Oxxxes, someone is holding a placard with the legend 'We wants Wires' - this is not a reference to the band WIRE, but a mock protest at the fact that Oxes don't use guitar leads... this means they can run about all over (and out of) the venue they rock in/out. I guess they impressed me As I bought both their CDs on the same day! Peace be unto you 'n' yr tiny Texan dick! Ah! The new Fat Bob is alright. I know he won't be your cuppa but I think he's written some great pop songs. And you have to respect a man who lives in Norfolk and compares it with the deep south ; ) >They sound about as much like Sonic Youth as Liars do the Strokes >(amusingly some shmuck has written a review that can be found at www.liarsliarsliars.com >comparing Liars to Strokes, probably just because they're based in NYC - >DOH!) Doh indeed. Strokes LP available for #7.99 at HMV for those interested BTW. And talking of The Liars, those of you who have been swayed by... a) their live performances... b) Bill's rave review... please note that The Liars splendidly titled LP has not been released yet in the UK. I searched for it today but couldn't find it. I did that very British thing of looking everywhere before asking (and how jolly inappropriate when we're talking about a group of Noo Yawk upstarts!) - only to be told it's not released until the 19th. So lucky old Bill has presumably got an advance copy. I won't pretend I'm not jealous of this, cos I am. I need to start either submitting reviews to the NME, not that they'd publish them. :) The Liars LP, if it has anything half as good as "Grown Men Don't Just Fall in the River Like That", will certainly be worth getting. I intend to, anyway - looking forward to it. (FWIW, it puts me in mind of a more intelligent, complex version of a lot of the hardcore/punk stuff - mainstream reference being the late, lamented At the Drive-In for me, but this could just be because it's a genre I don't know all too well.) Ugh. Hang the DJ. >If we are to be thrust into the midst of PUNK77 revival then LIARS are already >way beyond (just like WIRE). A Punk77 revival sounds very boring. More hair and guitars and spit and leather, and sweaty blokes. And Transvision Vamp revival no thanks. I saw a glimpse of a far more interesting 'scene' on Saturday. Groups of teenagers took turns playing raucous, bass-heavy UKgarage and hip hop on a little stage on the fringe of the G-Percussion festival in Manchester. This was more exciting than any moshpit punky guitar bollocks, but still retained the essence of punk. It was fast, loud, angry and DIY. Trouble is these kids will probably be aspiring to MTV Hip Hop Superstar bling bling status. They won't get it and will end up working in a call-centre ringing me up (when I'm not in) trying to sell me life insurance. Todays potential makers of the next musical revolution need to learn how to be both funky and poor. Would todays bands put up with the real hardship, starvation and general grimness that the Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones, The Sex Pistols et al put up with pre-fame? They want it all on a plate these young upstarts! >Just discovered 2 >LAGER CANS >lurking in fridge > >Breakfast time! Lager for breakfast!
