A year in which the good ship Fenn O'Berg (Christian Fennesz, Jim O'Rourke & Peter Rehberg) docked once again into the digital landscape sporting a brand new shiny silver platter. Having travelled this vast planet extensively, they once again return, to present us, the fortunate listener, with an edited compendium of their overseas sojourns (in truth it's actually recordings from Paris and Vienna, but hey, we are not about to let such technicalities get in the way of a good press release). Brimming with all kinds of tomfoolery, Fenn O'Berg stretch wide the improvised flag layering sound in sample on sound. The result is a playful and puzzling platter. Melodic loops, eccentric electronics, romantic interludes and emotional spontaneity - it's all here! Along this exotic journey, one can visualize the sweat dripping amongst the keys, the strain of performers fingers, and other on-stage shennanigens of our motley trio. Sounds like fun? It is, and cheap too, well, normal CD price, but with a snappy design, paper sleeve AND that unmistakable Fenn O'Berg sound, who's to complain? 2002 a year where everyone wins, especially you, the soon to be owner of these fine wares. The worst band I have ever heard. Even Blur were better than this shite. The drummer had no drums but instead smashed things and read random texts from books when he got bored of that, or played his only CD (the Stranglers Collection) in the background. He chose the name. His older brother had the biggest collection of porn I've ever seen. We did a 20 min cover of Sham 69's Hurry Up Harry and Sonic Youth's Ghost Bitch at the same time. The guitarist quit because he couldn't be bothered to carry his amp. The last I heard of him he was working as a bartender in Germany and getting paid in beer, but I doubt he made a career of it. *Chocolate Feeding Frenzy Bassist & Guitarist This band was quite promising until we got friends in who couldn't play as rhythm section. The other guitarist still plays in a London band who are just recording a demo. Half the band were trying to do a riot grrrl thing, the other half were more into Butthole Surfing or Pussy Galore, so it wasn't much of a surprise that it fell apart. *Object Guitarist Drummer also played for Coping Saw and Hood and is now Random Number (EP on Mogwai's label). Bassist plays in Manchester based Q-Car with two former members of Rocketfield. This was the first time I found a drummer who could actually stay in time, as opposed to some bozo who just likes hitting things. By the time the rest of the band had learnt my songs I was so bored of them I never wanted to play them again. Described by someone else as sounding like Trumans Water meets early Joy Division. Another comparison was Live Skull. This band was actually quite good. Tony Wilson turned up at our first gig because East West Coast on Factory Too were headlining, and Norm from Lobe (not the Swim band) chased him and made him pay to get in after he just walked in like he owned the place. *Fibreglass Messiah Spoken rants or computer noise www.planetsounds.co.uk *Fibreglass Messiah and Disgruntled Metal Pig Flat guitar and shopping trolley percussion improvisations, available for weddings funerals and political assassinations. Here's what he wrote in The Guide (last Saturdays Guardian) re. that night's ICA gig... 'Punk' remains a flag of convenience for all manner of terrible things, but Wire are a band who have consistently embraced the most liberating possibilities of the term. Old, when youth was having it's spiky-haired fling, and educated when education was not a desirable quality, the quartet of CN, BG, RG & GL combined the limited musical resources at theIr disposal with a finely-tuned art school aesthetic to produce some of the most starkly tuneful (not to mention beautifully packaged) records of the era. They have returned intermittently over the years, and for a while the spirit of their music lived on in the guise of Elastica, but now they have a new album (R&B) to promote, and look anxious to be taking the initiative once again. The Guide also features a gig guide, where they always have a top 5 'hear this!'. Wire at the ICA was no. 4 - behind Guilfest 2002, Truck festival, Major Matt Mason USA, and ahead of Uncle Paul Weller - with the comment.... Not just another nostalgia trip, though you can scream for I Am The Fly if you really want, as the arty post-punk two-minute wonders return with, yes, new songs.
