Bart [just a jealous guy] ================================================================= Hey there little Brother, WHAT A BLOODY BLOODY SHAME YOU COULD NOT BE THERE!!! Only just returned from it...I don't want to rub it in [I'll do that anyway!], but it was such a great great concert...at least, for me... both the boys thought it was just a load of shapeless noise! Hahaha, luckily there's still a thing like a generation-gap! I thought it was really superb - - enjoyed myself senseless! Compared to the Frank Black concert we visited this was so very superiour! After an hour of compilation of 10 years of Lewis/Gilbert video-art [all bollocks and boring imo] accompanied by a Gilbert soundtrack Wire played a rather short gig from 21.00 till 22.10, almost all of them new [at least, to me] songs. Super short rythmic without melodicly bombastic power neo-hardhouse-wall-of-sound-punk! For me a whole new kind of rock with loads of dynamics. Very subtile shifting rythms of each bandmember in a very high tempo. One turn of your head and immediately it sounded very different. Each song for me was a sort of mini-party in itself! One two three four!....And yeaaah, here we go again! The only song I recognized was Lowdown [If it is called that way - you wich song I'm talking about. I don't know all the correct titles cause I just had these albums on compilationtapes] wich they played as a first encore and wich was the most layed back song of the concert. There were something like 500 people there [nice institute], most of whom just stood there and watched, but I went at it like a drunken seal!!! Haha Joohoooo!!! As I said, your nephews didn't think much of it: "That Gilbert-guy is just chewing his dentures and constantly keeps his distortion/delay at the highest levels! The drummer looks like a senseless zombie. That Lewis-fellow is just strumming it like crazy and the singer sounds like a fucking Nazi on drugs!" Did a hell of a job raising the little bastards didn't it? ;-) I hope they'll be playing somewhere near you soon, cause this was unbelievably good. I heard they have a new cd out as well called Rip & Burn or something, but I'm sure you've got that one allready. An "ideal" copy would be appreciated when you visit us next week. Well, this was it - a superfresh review. I thought of you a lot and brought the "menu-card" of the evening. BTW, how was the gig received by your fellow-listees? See you next week, Ferenc ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 12:52:13 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Disturbing Quote of the Week > Andrew asked... > >Can are very high on the list (any recommendations there?) > > 'tago mago' and 'ege bamyasi' are fine by me... > > ian.s.j. no-one's mentioned Delay 1968 yet have they... a forgotten gem. Bruce Bilbert sound installation (the slowed down sound of bottles being hit with spoons fed through echo effects, or something). The video for He Said's 'Pump' which was faded out halfway through; shame as I'd not seen the video before - simple but innovative. DJ Bumpy's video/audio mix of the latest Eminem with the theme from British kids' TV show Thomas The Tank Engine. Hilarious! Funniest thing I'd seen all week (closely followed by Mark Bursa's Mr Logic email). A short video film about the M25 which I didn't warm to (any Wire link anybody?). A video image of a pink flag which came on a little like the Devo Corporate Anthem video. Wire - Newman on stage first singing against pre-recorded backing, Lewis and Gilbert follow; slight worry that Gray might be walking the dog again, but fears allayed; the set comprised of all of Read and Burn, the rest being new stuff, until the encore of Lowdown and Pink Flag. Second encore, another mutation of Drill, 12XU and god knows what. The set was superb. Intense, concentrated ferocity. Difficult to compare gigs over a period of 14 years but I don't think I've enjoyed Wire as much as I did last night. US fans - go out of your way if you need to, but go see them. They're on top form! I wonder, was anybody caught out by the early start? In the bar afterwards Wire and co mixed freely with the punters. Had a few words with Robert, who seemed pretty upbeat about events. I would have sought out fellow ICers, but the guy who was putting me up in London came with me. He's not a Wire fan (never heard anything by them), but we ain't seen each other in a year, and although a great mate, he's not the most relaxed and sociable person in new company. Incidentally, he loved it. I did amuse myself by trying to allocate IC IDs to members of the assembled masses, though. Was that Bill in a Melt Banana t-shirt? Who was that in the 'I'm feeling rather Wasted' t-shirt video-ing the gig? Who was that who bumped into me at the bar beforehand, and apologised with a warm and friendly smile (close cropped hair, dark rimmed glasses)? Anyway, I've had a roaring sick inducing hangover all day, which made the journety back up north something of a trial, so that's it from me. G'night all Ian B ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 20:10:27 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] more arty bollocks Alistair said... > Bill Drummond aka king boy d aka > the jamms aka the justified ancients of mu mu > aka the klf is presenting a 'discussion ' on > the question...'is god a c**t?' > > artists eh? just got round to reading 45 by Drummond. Not what I expected - thought it was gonna be a straightforward-ish autobiography, but for those of you who haven't read it, it's basically a series of essays about stuff that happens in his 45th year (with a few historical bits thrown in here and there). Well-written (he even makes a trip to the library sound interesting) and at times very entertaining. It's also well worth reading for the Julian/Teardrops bits and the Tammy Wynnette joins the JAMMS...
