Read the book a long time ago and found it very disturbing (as intended I hope). I like Ballard, though I didn't read a lot of his. Day of Creation was great. I think all his books have this tropical surreal feeling to them which strikes some familiar chords with me (well, Israel's climate's not really tropic, but a heat of more than 35 degrees with a humidity of more than 90% is close enough, and as to surrealism - it's all around) > >> Has anyone seen his new one? I thought Existenz, his >last one, was >> really brilliant. >> > Didn't see either > > In what ways was Existenz brilliant? An intelligent Matrix is what it was, and maybe the only cyberpunk film to go deeper than special FX (it is intentionally organic and does not show anything computerish). It deals, like most Cronenberg films, with the human body and our relation to it. The visual imagery is one of Cronenberg's best and strongest, and brings the notion of computer viruses attack back to the biological body (a hint of Snow Crash, I guess). The plot is intentionally simplistic. Jennifer Jason Leigh is superb, even more than usual, because Cronenberg directs her. Ian Holm is supporting, again (when will Cronenberg give him a major role?). Another film you should watch more than once before passing judgement. And the opening titles are a complete masterpiece. >> I think Cronenberg was the first one to admit that the film is quite > limited >> compared to the book. And he did insist of making it a narrative film, so >> had to virtually change the whole concept and make into a film (mainly) >> about writer's block. > > This is the wonder of cut ups. > The perfect antidote to writer's block! So maybe Cronenberg shouldn't have directed it, but I really liked the fact that he turned the book into a Cronenberg movie, which raises the question - should an adaptation from literature to film be considered as a cover version, in which the new performer strives to make the song his own, or just a transference from one medium to another? > Up Above the World & > The Sheltering Sky > > are also good books, but Bowles is a master of the short story.
