It's *worth* it. Seek it out and buy both albums, they are that good. This is also one reason why many songs weren't presented as part of the Brochure Exhibit - the atmosphere was impossible to recapture. I'm also not sure how much production Mike Thorne did on the Chairs Missing out-take version of UW. I only heard it once. It was the worst version of the five. which brings me to a question...you say there are five versions?..which cds/lps are these to be found? thanks, Robert ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2002 23:35:51 +0100 From: "Bill Hick" Subject: [idealcopy] Gilbert Alert! Can you say a few words about the "DIY", or "Do It Yourself" concept? These 13 bands may have had outward differences, but they all sang the same tune inside. It was damn the torpedoes, we're going to be ourselves and we're not going to adjust our art and ourselves to a mainstream aesthetic just to 'make it'. If we have to build our own infrastructure to do it, then that's what we're going to have to do. We'll do it ourselves. Punk is often associated with nihilism but this couldn't be further from the indie scene profiled in the book, which was fostered on community, cooperation, stick to-it-ness, being proactive and making things happen. Even J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr, who became known as a poster-boy slacker, played a lot, played often and played like a demon, aesthetically creating that band. Mascis and everyone else were all very driven and more to the point, I'd say a good 90 percent of people in the book are still playing music today. Talk about lifers... and making really good music too. These people were inspired by punk and its ideas of strength of will and not falling prey to what is served to you on a consumer platter. That spirit was shared. It didn't necessarily mean that they all sounded the same, or that they wanted to. http://www.junkmedia.org/01/34/bester34.html "Pissing in a river Watching it rise" (Patti Smith - Pissing in a River) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2002 18:47:57 EDT From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Gilbert Alert!
