However, due to its design, R&B can be easily seen at a distance as a block of (non) colour, which may also attract attention. Being a mid-price release is then more likely to tempt people into giving it a go, rather than a pretty picture. 2p. Being a mid-price release is then > more likely to tempt people into giving it a go, > rather than a pretty picture. I agree [though I hardly payed a midprice for R&B01]. Wire always has had edgy minimalistic sleeves using multi-interpretable static photography and severe graphics. 154 seems a bit the odd one out for me, being more cleancut and academic and I don't like it all that much either... bit too zeitgeist a la the Damned's Music for Pleasure or even XTC's Drums and Wires for my taste. At the time of A Bell is a Cup I remember making lotsa tapes for me and my friends in a similar manner - cutting out images and playing with their juxtapositions... a very good practice [wich, yessssh... makes perfect]. What I didn't like AT ALL was The First Letter's photoshoppy inner doggy sleeve... though outer sleeve and Wir logo was truely brilliant - ahead of it's time really! I think In Esse captures the mood of the er... music exactly right as does R&B01. It's like there's as less time/space for bullshit in the design as there is in the music. R&b01's red lettering works extremely well here I think - though seemingly quiet it battles [on the edges] with the grey-blueish hue in the background. R&B01's designer David Coppenhall works [worked?] for the same firm [v23] as Vaughan Oliver [who did almost all of the Pixies sleeves]. Together they designed Fripp/Syvian's The First Day. Coppenhall also did BC Gilbert's "I Play All My Records Through The Vac-O-Rec Anti Static Discharge Cleaner" [or "RAUM"], WHORE and Brian Eno's Box 1: Instrumental [together with Russel Mills]. Graphic Design nowadays tends more towards minimalism in image and typography [wich I personally find very interesting] after years of computergenerated excesses. For the most part, Sonic Youth tends to very accessible live: the bursts of noise are kept short, and jams are non-existent. They usually play a great deal from the latest album (as you indicated), but sprinkle in enough "hits" to keep the impatient interested. Their solo shows are the opposite of this; they seem to have a clear division between their big label albums and tours and their independent albums and concerts (including their spectacular group recordings for Sonic Youth Records). They did play a show (as Sonic Youth)of pure experimental music in London last year. Apparantly much of the crowd became hostile, despite the fact that the show was advertised as such. They're not doing anything particularly original, but they've definitely got their own sound within a sound. The track by The Vaults was coming from a similar direction, but didn't grab me quite the same. Think I'll have to get 'They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top' though. I haven't seen a single wc match till now. But, as an active triathlete I'm very interested in cycling. Just had a time trial race yesterday evening ... Of course its boring watching sports ... doing it for yourself is all the fun and challenge. I sometimes "prepare" myself mentally the minutes before a race with a repeat-three-songs-function on my discman from ABIACUIIS. regards, FrankfromBavaria ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 09:04:44 +0100 From: Alistair Tear Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Fw: Soft Cell News Update Speaking of soft cell...
