Okay, I'm not a big one for lists, and there's four CDs here (one of which is a compilation), *and* this is in no kind of order, but: Doves, "The Last Broadcast" is proof you can do Big Rock without either being utterly vacuous or insanely arrogant; the "Future Rock and Roll" compilation I was talking about yesterday; Six by Seven, "The Way I Feel Today" (if they started now, the NME would be calling them No Name: I call them loud, cathartic, angry rock music), Wire, "Read and Burn 01"; Boards of Canada, "Geogaddi". This has been a broadcast from the mainstream; I'm sure the avant-garde will be covered adequately in short order. :) Andrew - -- "He lies on his side; is he trying to hide?" - - Wire, 'Outdoor Miner' ("Chairs Missing") adw27@cam.ac.uk (academic) | http://www.lexical.org.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 11:29:48 +0200 From: Bart van Damme Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT-surfa rosa = a surfa rosa = a surfa rosa Keith: > thought 'surfa rosa' was one of the greatest albums i'd ever heard. always > thought 'doolittle' - as much as i liked it - was it's over-produced little > brother. imo: Surfer Rosa = Pink Flag Doolittle = 154 Bart ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 11:54:00 +0200 From: Bart van Damme Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT-pixies reference obscured brainy piglove naziwilsowrongspunk It's real easy to make a Pixies comp. (^_^) Just to be clear to Pixies newcomers here, we've heard *some* of these songs before. "Come On Pilgrim" was Ivo's favorite songs from this demo. I've been reading thru spinART's webpage, and I'm not sure we're getting the whole tape. We may just be getting the other 9 songs. According to evo.org (which seems to be down right now...) Leviate Me (demo), The Holiday Song (demo), I've Been Tired (demo), Break My Body (demo), Down To The Well (demo), Rockaway Soul (demo), I'm Amazed (demo), Build High (demo), In Heaven (demo), Caribou (demo), Here Comes Your Man (demo), Subbacultcha (demo), Vamos (demo), Broken Face (demo), Nimrod's Son (demo), Isla de Encanta (demo), Ed Is Dead (demo) is the full "Purple" tape. Ivo made "Come On Pilgrim" from these tunes: Caribou, Vamos, Isla De Encanta, Ed Is Dead, The Holiday Song, Nimrod's Son, I've Been Tired, Levitate Me which is 8 tunes. That leaves...taa dah! - 9 tunes. (Evo.org is wrong about the "Come on Pilgrim" tracklisting, BTW. They omit "Caribou". I'll e-mail them today. (^_^)) To me, it's pretty evident when you hear "Come On Pilgrim" why Ivo liked 'em. They're great songs. If the other songs are as vibrant as these takes, it does make you wonder why they didn't just release the whole tape. Hmm. (^_^) It's also interesting to note how many songs from later Pixies CDs are on this tape. "Here Comes Your Man" from Doolittle, "Down to the Well" from Bossanova, "Build High" & "Subbacultcha" from the "Trompe Le Monde" era. It almost seems like Black Francis & Co. pretty much had the complete blueprint for the band right at the beginning.
