But if you mean 'British' football you open up the pandora's dirt box of Scottish Football, quite the most piss-poor professional league in Europe. >> the most overrated? >> For my money Chelsea, which has the highest wage bill, a galaxy of expensive foreign stars, yet which fails year after year to challenge for the title or make the champions' league. So each season several of the overpaid idle fops bugger off back to Italy, only to be replaced with more workshy wasters. For the handful of Engliush players, the lure of London's nightclubs rmeains a top attraction, with inevitable conosequences, m'lud*.They'll finish 6th again this season. Put your money on it. I got a 1968 NME (for a Ty. Rex interview) through the post today and the news section featured this little gem... 'Love Affair's 17 yr old organist Lynton Guest has left the group, and has been replaced by Morgan Fisher - who was one of the original founder members of the quintet when it was formed two years ago. A spokesman for the group explained that Lynton has always been regarded as only a temporary replacement for Morgan, while he was completing his education and taking his 'A' levels. A deputy organist was needed ten months ago was needed ten months ago, when the group decided to turn fully professional. It was at this time that Lynton agreed to take over, on the understanding that he would stand down as soon as Morgan was available.' Also in the news, 'new Beatles disc' Hey Jude, and dates for a joint Scott Walker/Lulu 'autumn concert tour' (I kid ye not!). There's also ads for the likes of 'Say A Little Prayer', 'Do It Again' and a single entitled Love's Black & White - "as featured in Coronation Street" - by Bill Kenwright, who I believe is now Everton's chairman. Shouldn't that read Love's BLUE & White! But "deputy organists"??? I can feel a band name coming on... Actually the US are probably the worst team remaining in the tournament. The defence is hopeless, the forwards naive. I wouldn't call Poland "lowly" in Football terms. A real quality team in the 70s (3rd place in 74 WC, let's not forget) was not followed up in the 80s but the team absolutely walked its qualifying group, so Poland's underachievement is a mystery. I suspect the hot & humid conditions caught them out - one or two defenders looked old and slow. They made changes to the defence and looked a lot better. Once agian Portugal's "golden generation" turn out to be a golden shower ;-) But take nothing from Korea (or Japan). They more than make up for their lack of experience with sheer energy and determination. I know Seoul quite well (been there a dozen or so times) and I'd love to be part of tonight's party!
