The Wire > Page first went online in May 1995, which makes > it one of the oldest pages on the web. I'm sure I speak for us all in saying 'thank you' for maintaining such a great site for five years. I'm sure people don't realise quite how instrumental it's been in the continued success of Wire, and there would also have certainly not been a Wireviews without it. In fact, the page got me back into Wire in a big way, transcribing lyrics and so on, and the guitar tab has provided many-a fun hour with my old Hohner. > The good news is that all is not lost! Craig and I > have been working together for some time to > integrate our web pages. Again, thanks to Andrew for allowing me to do this. It's great that the information containted within TWP will survive online (along with credit to Andrew!) In fact, Wireviews was updated yesterday with a rather more substantial change than for the last few months. Along with the usual update to the A List, there are two new reviews, some news, and the majority of Read and Burn 01 tracks now have guitar tab! You may have also noticed that Graham Lewis kindly provided the actual texts for the first Hox album, so three of the lyrics pages are now confirmed (the others being R&B 01 and Bastard/Voice). Again, if anyone is in a position to check what's online against liner notes (where they exist), I'd be most grateful--if a couple of dozen listers took a single album each, they'd be done in no time! Let me know if you can help. Best Craig. ===== - ------- Craig Grannell / Wireviews --- http://www.wireviews.org News, reviews and dugga. Also not the first time he's purloined T Rex riffs - Panic = Metal Guru. I don't dislike it, but to me some of the songs deliberately try to imitate a Pink Flagish feel. Never mind the zeitgeist, I like Wire better when they surprise me as they have done with earlier recordings - when they constantly seem to be a step ahead of me. I don't see all that much difference between ripping your own catalogue or someone else's. Why not look at this as retro too? It's so obvious... Only Graham's vocals on "agfers" are lost in the mix.... highlights? they totally rip "first fast" to shreds. it was my least favorite on R&B01 but sounds like a classic here stripped down to a guitars/drum/bass. "i don't understand" is better and more loose then on record, especially the ending where it sounds like they are all chanting "i don't understand!" at the same time. plus i just can't get enough of the new version of "pink flag" these days... as for the new songs, the "drill remix" combines some 80s wire-esque guitar bits with colin screaming over a breakneck robert beat, "read and burn" and "ten years after" are punkier/R&B type songs, and the epic "mr. marx's table" didn't leave much of an impression on first listen, besides having some subdued colin vocals....will have to listen again once i get off work here. if anyone's interested in a trade for it...let me know ~michael ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 May 2002 15:18:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Ari Britt Subject: Fwd: Re: [idealcopy] retro , oh dear pt 2 .net> > > get it??? didn't, but... > > with regard to the bin, can i put eric clapton in it > and then kick the > thing > across the room as hard as i can! > > keith > > Yes Yes,do it do it NOW!!!!(along with the > bleatles, the stones, peter frampton, prince and > titknee > spears)Ari > - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Click a to send an instant message to an online > friend = Online, = Offline > > > --- Keith Astbury > wrote:> > > > > > > ===== > everything in moderation is good for you, including > excess. > Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup > http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com > ===== everything in moderation is good for you, including excess. (wales didn't qualify, but oh what england would do to have ryan giggs down that left flank. yeah i know he's wasted with us!) >> One of the great Football Myths is the belief that Giggs could have played for England. He couldn't. He's 100% Welsh. the misunderstanding comes from the fact he played for England Schoolboys. Which was because he went to school in England - that's the qualification requirement for Schoolboy honours. These songs were better when I saw the Breeders live than as presented here. Kinda underwhelming. Plus - no Kelley songs. I quite liked the Kelley Deal 6000 - uneven, but good. If you're a fan, you should probably get it. If you're not a fan, you may wonder what all the fuss is about. On a side note, Steve Albini makes a point in the liner notes of pointing out that the whole disc was recorded analog from start to finish. I bet the vinyl sounds pretty good - I'm going to try to get a copy as soon as I can. Madrid, Prado. In The Stone of Folly we see a quack doctor cutting a peasant's head open to extract a stone that causes the peasant's stupidity. This was a familiar jest in the Netherlands: the peasant's stupidity is proved when he pays a charlatan to cut his head open. In this version, however, the charlatan is producing a tulip blossom from the patient's scalp; another is already on the table. The inscription reads, Meester snyt die keye ras. Myne name is Lubbert das. (Master cuts the stones out. My name is Lubbert Das.) The quack doctor is assisted by a quack priest and a quack nun. The funnel on the doctor's head and the book on the nun's are derisive. The operation to remove the "stone of folly" is a satire on both quackery and credulity, but similar operations, perhaps with the same object, may really have been performed. The Prado has Juan de Seville's San Lucas, in which we see St. Luke, with a gesture just like this one, putting a knife to the scalp of a bald little patient. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 May 2002 08:59:11 +0200 From: "bartvandamme@home" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] my name is...
