And as popsongs go surely Girls & Boys, Parklife or Country House too should be rated as such... Aaaaaaw... it's all so subjective... Like Leonard Cohen said: "If you call me brother now, according to who's plan". I can only rate something according to my own personal set of rules and I guess it therefor must be some sort of selfportrait... What I do find interesting in early Blur <-> later Blur is how Albarn in his lyric writing shifts from a more beholding viewpoint to a more personal approach, wich musically translates from carefree pop to a more searching disturbing sound. Does this all mean music gets more interesting when musicians have been challenged by life? Personally I've always tended towards more or less difficult music, but as I get older and becoming more difficult myself I'm not particularly seeking the obscure anymore... not necessarily bound by indie- or whatever rules. There's room for much more nowadays... There must be some sort of equilibrium at work here... What do you lot think. I had a chance to see their last tour and really liked their Kid A and Amnesiac stuff. During on of their encores they played "The Bends" and it really sounded dated in comparison. seeeeeee ya! ===== Rick Hindman, 3R Productions PO Box 7770 Santa Cruz, CA 95062 t: (831) 425-7335 f: (831) 425-7356 http://3rproductions.com Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 19:09:52 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] guess who? (strangely enough one of the damned tracks on this one, was 'smash it up' which was from much later in their career - i thought the roxy had long since closed by then?) this has probably been covered here before, but - rather than me having to trawl thru the archives - can anyone throw any light on this. what i'm most interested in knowing is...is this the only 'roxy' album available now (that's what virgin reckon) or is this available as part of a dbl cd (with the original version) which was my understanding of it. (if so i'd obviously prefer to get that than just this). thanks. keith ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 19:31:40 +0100 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT - Guardian/music reviews Gaah, I'm getting increasingly concerned that some of my favourite stuff is getting used in commercials. I also hear that Sigur Ros have been used in the USA to sell something. There's whole chunks of classical music I can't listen to without some unbidden images springing to mind and I don't want MY music to go the same way. I can't let this anti-folkism pass without comment. I'd regard neither John Martyn nor Nick Drake as folk. They're bleeding singer-songwriters. And they're both mostly dull (although I too will make allowances for Solid Air). I'm very suspicious of Nick Drake's hipness as I'm sure had he not died that he would have a small portion of the fame. He reminds me most of Kevin Coyne, who has the misfortune to still be alive and therefore ignored. As someone aware of the 'underground' in the early 70s, I'd never heard of Drake. Which doesn't detract from any worth he may have but does call into question whether he really had quite as many fans as is now claimed and puts his martyrdom into some perspective - his profile was VERY low. As for proper folk - I spent the summer of 77 switching from punk to folk with ease and they seemed to be two sides of the same coin, both angry and politically clued-in. Martin Carthy is one of England's Chief of Men - a man who has never wavered from doing what he believes and creating an incredible body of work in the process. Back in 1993 I organised a 'Top 100 album' challenge among some friends and work colleagues. About 25 joined in - all white, vast majority male, and mostly late 20s, to mid 30s. These were mostly people who regarded music as an important part of their lives. 'Automatic for The People' won best album hands down. It had been out for less than a year at the time and its influence was clearly massive - most people included it in the 100 and a number in the top 10 (I only asked for the top ten in order - I'm not that demanding). I suspect that now it would be nowhere near as well regarded - it's seen as virtually MOR now (probably because of 'Everybody Hurts' rather than 'fuck me kitten'). My wife plays background music while editing and I notice that it's on the pile with Classic FM's 'Time to Relax' and Pavarotti's greatest hits. I never play it, perhaps because it's so familiar - I'd reach for 'New Adventures in Hi-Fi' first if I want an REM moment (I'm a latecomer - 'Green' onwards - and like the original Keith have never understood the early stuff). Second in that list by the way was 'The Velvet Underground and Nico'. another the Keith - ------------------ > yeah, 'automatic' is a funny one. not THAT commercial on the face of it - > certainly no shiny happy moments on it and yet it was massive. and then the > electric 'monster' glamfest wasn't. maybe it was just a rare case of the > public liking the better album (even if i did quite like the one dimensional > nature of 'monster' myself). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 15:16:46 +0100 From: "DAVID HEALE" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] guess who?SERIUOS..THIS FORTRAN 5 LP..
