I went down for the day and should only have turned up for the music because there is sod all to do in Camber Sands and it was cold and windy. I saw about 5 of the supporting bands and can remember little of them except that most were from the US and none were particularly interesting. Unfortunately, I missed Shellac who were really good apparently. Spotted Captain Sensible wondering around, I wonder why. The show ran to clockwork, Wire were top of the bill and due to come on at 23:45 which they did. The set list was pretty much the same as Bristol with the addition of 12XU as part of the encore. The opening track was now a backing track with Colin singing (after a fashion) over it. The set started with powerful flashlights being shone around and at Colin by the others. It was great to see a bit of energy finally generated by the music and well worth the wait. Lots of dancing and a finale of Lowdown, 12XU and Pink Flag. 12XU failed somewhere and just as it got to its peak, it didn't. IMHO, Wire blew away the other groups, the current set whilst not their most innovative is certainly showing Wire at their most energetic and crowd pleasing and it's so nice to to hear new material that rocks. Uri ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 18:02:27 +0100 From: "Bill Hick" Subject: [idealcopy] Is it All in the Art of Stopping? The slayer of giants In the finest of stockings! "The Agfers of Kodack" was slower and Graham sang all of it. It seemed to sound better that way. All the new songs sound different live, and all seemed at least slightly slower except maybe "In the Art of Stopping" which reminded me of "Cheeking Tongues" more than ever. The guitar riff seems to echo the vocal melody of "Cheeking Tongues." Colin held a mike in one hand and thrashed at an open tuned headless plank for Art. The lead kept falling out of his guitar so that he seemed to be giving an inadvertent practical demonstration in the art of stopping, but luckily Bruce was making so much noise it didn't matter much. Graham was the most animated I've ever seen him perform, pulling hilarious illustrative facial expressions and wrestling the bass like his life depended on it. Bruce of course was the opposite, turning back to face Robert who seemed even more still and calm then ever, quite the opposite to the cartoonish flailings of Shellac drummer Todd Trainer. Neither "Germ Ship" nor "Pink Flag" had the energy of Edinburgh 2000 but only marginally less so. How many dead or alive? Colin's amp sounded on the verge of meltdown as he struck out on the "Pink Flag" one chord fast thrash rhythms. A magnificently assured "Lowdown" was probably the slowest number and the best I've ever heard about the time that's too short but never too long. Bruce finished "Pink Flag" by twisting all his effects into overdrive. Despite Colin and Graham both opining that the warm up in Bristol the night before had been better, I didn't meet one witness who was not blown away by Wire's performance. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 20:19:45 +0100 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] C4 : The Alcohol Years Yes, Carol Morley is Paul's sister. Not the biggest factory aficionado in the world (prefer the admittedly short-lived 'Zoo' myself), but here goes... Joy Division - Closer Like another reader - Dan? - I could manage without the 'Atrocity Exhibition', but otherwise... The 'Eternal'/'Decades' double header is virtually unsurpassed any time any place. (I recall an old smash hits where Robert Smith picked 'The Eternal' as his fave track ever) Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures 'a loaded gun won't set you free' can still send shivers. Happy Mondays - Squirrel & G-Man Had heard/liked stuff on Peel, but didn't expect to like this album quite so much. Fave track - 'Russell. Happy Mondays - Bummed Not only contains the might 'Write For Love', but also - on the inside sleeve - the least erotic looking nude shot EVER! New Order - Lowlife Desc. - rightly IMO - at the time by P.Morley (I think) as New Order's 'Closer'. Happy Mondays - Pills Thrills 'n' Bellyaches The H.M. on a commercial high - before their big 'Yes Please' descent (the Mondays very own 'Kill Uncle'). New Order - Brotherhood Considered slightly disappointing after 'Lowlife' but it has it's moments inc. the mighty 'Bizarre Love Triangle'. New Order - Power Corruption & Lies Still finding their feet post-Curtis, but some GREAT moments... Crispy Ambulance - Plateau Phase Still one of my fave names for a band... haven't played this in a long time but feel sure I'd like it. (haven't played 'Here Comes Everybody' or 'Always Now' for a long time either, but suspect I'd prefer this...) New Order - Technique Like it a lot, but don't consider this the classic that a lot of N.O. fans do. will I ruffle a few feathers if I say I prefer 'Get Ready'???? (Ian mentioned 'England Made Me'. Haven't picked it but 'Move....' would be with my fave fact. tracks...)
